I can only assume you have never spent any time around professional chefs.

That's the thing though: he never thought of himself as an especially good chef! I don't even consider him a chef really. As far as I'm aware, he mostly just worked in steak places a long time ago. I'd consider his work more in the vein of food-cultural fusion. He was a food journalist, a writer, enamored more with the people making the food than the food itself.

It would have been so easy for him to come across as the usual uber-douche, but he approached his work with a genuine and rare sense of adventure, gravitas, giddiness, earnestness. Confident but never full of himself. Guy emerged from the womb oozing coolness.

How does someone hate Anthony Bourdain?! I loved Parts Unknown. Odd stuff indeed.
Parts Unknown was a great show, but I think I liked No Reservations a little better. It wasn’t as clean visually, but it was still great and I think you got a better sense of him going places and experiencing them for the first time. Whereas Parts Unknown seemed more polished but less new/adventurous. Quite a few of the episodes were returning to places he’d already been. I also have a certain sentimental/personal attachment to them for a few reasons.

Regardless, both were great and wouldn’t have worked with any other host. He made that show. He was one of the only celebrity deaths that really bummed me out.

Parts Unknown wasnt even about the food as much as it was about exposing the West to people and cultures from all over the world. Probably my favorite Docuseries ever and I legitimately am a better person for having watched it. No Reservations was more food centric though and if his career ended there it wouldnt have been been that important of a legacy.

He was the executive chef for years while at a French restaurant in NYC called Brasserie Les Halles.

That's part of the reason I don't like these gobshites, but mostly it's because I just want people to eat their food and shut the f*** up talking about it. Sir David Attenborough talking about some weird bird in the middle of nowhere? Yes please. Some jerkoff chef - and don't kid yourself, they are all disgusting, massive jerkoffs - oohing and ahhing with their mouth full of food? F*** right off and go snort a pile, creep.
