What choice did they have?I’m glad the league tried to put an end to good planning decisions
Chicago is not a southern team and they escaped far worse than this with the old wrist slap. It's a Southern US team. They'll probably give them a draft pick and leniency on their cap, giving them props for showing initiative.
NHL banning young players from hanging out with teammates at a free skate at the team facility is the funniest thing ever.
NO YOU MUST STAY AT HOME ALONE AND CAN'T TRAIN!
If you purposefully miss the point of all of this then yeah, it does seem a little funny.NHL banning young players from hanging out with teammates at a free skate at the team facility is the funniest thing ever.

Joke post.Joke league
If it was optional ice but the coach himself admitted in an ill-advised moment of candor, caught by media, that wasn't really optional for the bubble guys/rookies, then that is indeed a problem.
It's collectively bargained rest time that is built into the schedule, time off that the PA fought to secure in past CBA negotiations..The issue isn't that the vets decide or decide not to go, clad in the warm embrace of their NMCs and lavish contracts that extend for another 7 or 8 years. It's the implications for players without any power whose vacation time is canceled by an unwritten expectation that an 'optional' practice isn't really optional for them at all.
The rule protects the little guy, not the stars. Failure to act puts the league in danger of legal action by the PA, which because it's collectively bargained, is black and white on such violations. The league needs to acknolwedge that and punish the behavior, reiterating that it's no bueno.

Damn, there goes another Ottawa Senators pick.
Well played.Damn, there goes another Ottawa Senators pick.
When you provide an “option” to work over a holiday, it creates a culture where there is pressure to work over the holiday. Employers can judge employees who don’t show up for not wanting to put extra time in. Inevitably, employees feel they have to show up so they create the right impression at work, even though the organization officially declares a holiday/time off. The CBA declares holidays as days the employees don’t have to work and includes rules that employers have to follow to support this decision to protect players’ rights. Can you explain the point to me since I missed it? The assumption that this was a practice, even though the players were already on the ice as DeBoer entered the facility? That's some serious team practice right there.
Something that is allowed, is not circumventing the cap... you'd think someone wearing purple would be better than the trolls who constantly regurgitate this lie.Funny, NHL makes this a big deal but ignores teams circumventing the cap to cheat and win in the playoffs.
How stupid and arrogant is Dallas to risk anything to hold one practice (as if it’s going to make some enormous difference) and tell on themselves?
No practice was held though.
Nothing is stopping players from training or getting a sheet of ice away from the team and playing. It's to stop "optional" skates that really aren't optional if you're not a core player on the team during your holiday break.NHL banning young players from hanging out with teammates at a free skate at the team facility is the funniest thing ever.

Not according to your coach. No practice was held though.
Not according to your coach.
NHL honestly has no choice in the matter, and the NHLPA has no choice but to hold their feet to the fire on it. The players negotiated a hard stop for the holidays into the CBA, so the NHL has no choice but to put it foot down in some way or the NHLPA could sue them for breach of contract.
There is a reason the NHL put out a memo just days ago about what wasn't allowed. Its because the players forced that into their contract with the NHL.

The team isn't allowed to provide ice for the players to skate during certain period of time.
You wouldn't have that opinion if your team wasn't (potentially) facing a penalty for going against the rules.
“I was at the rink yesterday—we had an optional—and of course the young guys all show up for the optionals, which they’re supposed to do,” said DeBoer with a laugh. When did the coach use the word practice? He didn't.
Did you listen to the press conference where he listed off the players that were on the ice before he was even in the building? They were skating when he walked in to the facility.. interesting practice setup there.
People are so hard stuck on it being a practice, when it wasn't. Elliot Freidman and Robert Tiffin are now calling it a "skate" and not a "practice" anymore because the reporting wasn't even correct lmao

Whether he used the word practice doesn't matter, NHL franchises weren't even allowed to provide open ice to the players, so what ever word you want to use or not use doesn't matter. The minute he admitted that some of the players are supposed to do something he made a pretty big blunder.
These are all interesting questions.
