Calgary Surprises Everyone, Wins Division

Breakout star Matt Stajan celebrates a goal with teammate Jarome Iginla.

Under a new coach and a new general manager, the Calgary Flames became a powerhouse, accumulating 109 points in the regular season.
"No one expected us to be a playoff team," said GM Deku Scrub. "Not even me!"
You may be wondering, how exactly did Calgary become so good? All they did in the offseason was acquire Dennis Wideman and Jiri Hudler. Hudler did not have much of an impact, but Wideman was the team's best defenseman, scoring 53 points. At the beginning of the season, analysts stated that Calgary was weak at the center position. On paper, they were, but Matt Stajan and Mikael Backlund both had breakout career years. In the end, the biggest reason for Calgary's regular season success was Miikka Kiprusoff, who has been nominated for the Vezina Trophy. Here are the stats for the entire roster:

Why does the salary go up for my players in Be A GM mode? Backstrom went from 6.7 to 7.240 and I signed Voracek to 2.6 but went up to 2.910. All my players salaries went up.

You were probably under the cap and the game automatically adjusted your players' salaries to rectify the situation.

Preds Ready To Prowl

Nashville Predators ready to begin a new season

620-preds-hockeytown-thumb-620xauto-138475.jpg

Ryan Suter (left), Pekka Rinne (center), and Shea Weber (right) are all integral to the Predators' success. All 3 are also in contract years.

The Nashville Predators have had considerable success the past 2 seasons, qualifying for the playoffs each season. Last season, for the first time in franchise history, they made it out of the first round, taking down the Anaheim Ducks in 6 games. However, they lost to eventual Cup finalists Vancouver in 6 games the next round. This season, many analysts are pegging the Predators as serious Cup contenders. A big reason for this is the 'Big Three' of defenceman Shea Weber and Ryan Suter, and goaltender Pekka Rinne. The Preds are not known as a team who scores alot, but their defence is among the League's elite. Weber and Suter are 2 way studs, consistently giving Nashville one of the best pairings in the NHL. Rinne is among the League's top 'tenders, and always gives Nashville a chance to win. However, all 3 are in their contract years, giving Preds GM David Poile a big problem.

"Yes, our 3 big guys are free agents at season's end. We are confident, however, that we can sign them to long term extensions. They are our biggest priority" Poile said. At forward, the Preds are not the highest scoring team, but they have some good talent. Patric Hornqvist is arguably their best sniper, having scored 51 goals the past 2 seasons. Martin Erat is another deadly winger who can fill the twine. Also included in Nashville's top 6 are the Kostitsyn twins, Andrei and Sergei. Both are skilled, and are expected to produce this season. David Legwand gives Nashville another skilled forward. Youngsters Colin Wilson and Craig Smith are also expected to make an impact.

When asked if they are a Cup contender, Poile said "For sure. We have the talent, so I fully expect us to make it deep into the postseason".

Can Nashville achieve the goals many expect them to this season?

Flames Blow Past Blues in Round One

Jaroslav+Halak+David+Moss+Calgary+Flames+v+QjLY9FUcAVvl.jpg

David Moss celebrates his goal on the road in game 4.

One of the biggest questions heading into the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs was whether or not the Calgary Flames could continue their regular season success in the postseason. So far, the answer is yes. It only took the squad five games to take down the St Louis Blues, mostly thanks to one man - Miikka Kiprusoff.

"We wouldn't even be anywhere near the playoffs if it weren't for Miikka." team captain Jarome Iginla told the media.

Miikka Kiprusoff has been nominated for the Vezina Trophy, and through the first five games of the playoffs, he has a save percentage of .949% and a goals against average of 1.39.

Game 1: 5-2 Win
Game 2: 6-2 Win
Game 3: 1-0 Loss
Game 4: 4-1 Win
Game 5: 2-1 OT Win

The Flames will be facing another hot goaltender in the second round, Jonathan Quick and the Los Angeles Kings.

Kings Destroy Flames In Round Two

4_201203290223153806.jpg

Jonathan Quick robs Alex Tanguay in close.

It all was too good to be true for the Calgary Flames.

"We expected a tough battle against the Kings," said Dennis Wideman. "And it's a shame they beat us, but they proved themselves to be the best team in the league." The Kings went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Game 1: 7-1 Loss
Game 2: 2-0 Loss
Game 3: 2-1 Win
Game 4: 3-0 Loss
Game 5: 4-3 2OT Loss

On a positive note, goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff won the Vezina Trophy at the NHL awards in Las Vegas. The Calgary Flames offseason report is coming up next.

I always enjoy coming in here and reading some dynasties. I even back track to find the opening entry if I really like a write up, and follow it through the thread. I used to do these dynasties and make some write ups.

Its been far to long since the last one... So I will start one in the next few days. Ill keep my posts some what short so as to keep my own interest and anyone elses.

Any Ideas? And is there a new roster update with most of the recent trades, signings etc?

Blockbuster Trade Highlights Flames Offseason

i
i

Kevin Shattenkirk and Chris Stewart - the two newest members of the Calgary Flames.

After falling apart in the Western Conference Semi-Finals last season, the Calgary Flames needed change. The team wasn't very active in free agency, but they did make two trades in the offseason.

Trade #1:
Calgary Receives: RW Chris Stewart (PWF, 85 OVR), D Kevin Shattenkirk (TWD, 84 OVR)

St Louis Receives: LW Jiri Hudler (SNP, 83 OVR), D Jay Bouwmeester (OFD, 85 OVR)

Trade #2
Calgary Receives: 2013 1st Round Pick

Pittsburgh receives: D Chris Butler (DFD, 81 OVR), 2013 3rd Round Pick

"Jay had a fantastic season last year. However, we needed to free up some cap space. We feel Kevin will be a great replacement. Jiri wasn't getting it done for us but the Blues believe in him and we think Chris will be an outstanding addition to our team."
- Flames GM Deku Scrub

Coming up next will be the Flames draft report and final roster heading into the 2012-13 season.
