Buffalo Bills The Doldrums of the NFL Off-season have arrived

A two-year starter at Kentucky, Hairston was the field cornerback in defensive coordinator Brad White’s scheme with a balanced mix of man and zone. He put himself on the NFL radar with an SEC-best five interceptions in 2023 and tied the school record with three career pick sixes. A fluid mover with A-plus speed, Hairston moves fairly effortlessly in all areas of the field. He plays to his help in man-to-man coverage while also showing conviction and awareness in Cover 3. He is a natural making plays at the catch point, but he’s also more scrappy than strong, which will show against physical NFL receivers and in run support.

Overall, Hairston is a competitive, lanky athlete who feels routes developing around him and plays with the reactionary movements and ball skills to fit a variety of coverages. If he makes the necessary improvements as a tackler, he has the talent to become a capable NFL starter early in his career.

Strengths

  1. Has height and length to match up with receivers
  2. His 4.28-second 40-yard dash and 24.25 mph were fastest in each category at combine
  3. Comfortable in man-to-man because of body twitch and nimble feet
  4. Quick to recognize route breaks and trigger/drive out of pedal from off coverage
  5. Enough deep speed to carry and compete vertically (loves to use sideline)
  6. Patient hips to mirror releases and get physical at line of scrimmage
  7. Finds ball quickly and without panic once he turns his head
  8. Flashes closing burst to attack throws without making early contact
  9. Collected six interceptions in 20 career starts
  10. Averaged 23.7 yards per interception return (six INTs for 142 yards and three TDs) and became sixth player in SEC history with a pair of pick sixes in single game
  11. Favorite player is Jalen Ramsey — they share similar confidence
  12. Want-to” in run support is night-and-day better than when he arrived, Kentucky coaches say

Weaknesses

  1. Lean-framed from head to toe, with minimal bulk
  2. Looks to get physical in press but spotty timing/technique leaves him step behind
  3. Overaggressive and handsy on double moves and stutter-and-go’s (something NFL quarterbacks will pick up on)
  4. Rarely played slot on tape
  5. Will throw body at ball carrier, instead of wrapping, allowing ball carrier to keep feet through contact and pick up extra yards
  6. Missed five games as junior because of shoulder injury (Sept. 2024)

Now the question is how much trust will he get going up against veteran options, especially when he misses his first tackle.

The tackling thing doesn't scare me. Our defense flies to the ball and gang tackles as well as if not better than most.

His speed is scary. He's a pick six waiting to happen. Love this pick.
