Who will it be?

Will HC shy away from appointing someone who is a GM of a NHL team after what happened with St. Louis and Yzerman's subsequent resignation?

My guess is Chiarelli.

Joe Sakic?
I think he'd be a good choice. Not a ton of experience, but neither did Yzerman when he first was offered the position and accepted.

It'd more likely be Patrick Roy since he's in on most of the decisions in Colorado.

I still believe that, if it has to come down to Sakic or Roy, that HC will choose Sakic. Roy is polarizing and come off as a hothead.

I could see it being Mark Messier.
Patrick Roy and Mark Messier are awful ideas. Patrick Roy was a spoiled brat back in 1998 with his demands. Screw him, clearly he didn't have the good of the country in mind and was only thinking about himself. Mark Messier made horrible choices some World Championships ago. He's one who'd construct a team like this year's Team USA.

I hope not. That would be a disaster imo.

They've gone with back to back unqualified guys, so why buck the trend?

They always go with guys who have ties to Team Canada, and he also built the 2010 World Championship team. The team of course blew but I wouldn't be shocked if they call on him again.

I suspect it will be Sakic. He and Yzerman are always put together in the minds of fans, and with good reason. Sakic is a thoughtful hockey guy, is now immersing himself in the profession of NHL management (much like Yzerman prior to 2010) and is a legendary player for Canada that no one could complain about. Seems like the logical follow up to Yzerman.

Messier has too many shady instances when involved with personnel decisions to warrant consideration (I hope HC agrees). Roy turned down HC multiple times while still in his prime (even the World Cup and Olympics) so I highly doubt they will consider him. Chiarelli is fine as an assistant, but I did not like how he advocated for Kunitz (claiming he could make the team regardless of Crosby) and Lucic in the behind the scenes video by CBC.

Coaching staff is much more important. The average poster on this website could select a team Canada more than strong enough to win.

Holland, Bowman, Chia, and Sakic. That's one hell of a brain trust.

i'm more than happy with the job Yzerman did, but what is the time line to have to make this decision ?

I'm okay with sakic but to be honest I'm not even sure what the criteria for the position are seeing as they took Stevie Y who had little experience.

I suspect we will be in good hands so long as they keep going uber defense.

I agree with all of this. Sakic is probably the odds-on favorite to be the next EGM, and I would be surprised if Holland, Chiarelli, Armstrong (or some subset of two of these three) don't return. I was very impressed by Doug Armtrong's commentary during the CBC video which you cited, then probably those of Ken Holland. Like you said, Chiarelli went to bat for Lucic and Kunitz. Lowe will probably be there too. Messier needs to be kept as far away from this process as humanly possible. All in all, these are all strong hockey minds that bring different viewpoints and experiences to the table, and you can't fault them for expressig those views. Sakic's role (assuming he's the EGM) will be to extract that information and build consensus.

The coaching staff is hugely important. I see no reason to change it up, but that decision will have to be made by others, including the coaches themselves. Much like the players, the management team and coaching staff have developed "chemistry" going through these processes as well, and I would expect there to be some impact in player selection or usage resulting from Yzerman's resignation, even if its not apparent to us.

Bob Murray?

Ducks success is clearly not all his but he's been pretty damn consistant since burke left, i'd give him a nomination
