…..ok. Why would they trade for a 35yr old UFA rights for 4 days?
So they are drafting this ultra high end prospect names Conor Bedard. Foligno has a track record of being a Captain and high individual character.

Perhaps Chicago wants to speak with his camp to see if he’d be interested in signing a one year deal to mentor Bedard and then he can get traded to a contender at the deadline.

THAT, or the BOS wanted to clear a contract slot in case they make a move before free agency (I don’t know if this would even matter, just spitballin’ since Johansen was traded for Galchenyuk but NSH has no intentions of signing him).

Ok... did you unintentionally just establish the 2023-2024 Islander season meme? :sarcasm:
Hell No! I'm always an optimist going into a new season . . . heck, who would have predicted that the Marlins would have a better record than the Yankees or Mets today?

And when Hobart wins the 2024 NCAA Lax Crown, you can see who said it first!

What about 4x6 for Tarasenko as a UFA? He’ll be 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 over the term (he’s a December birthday).

In two years, five old guys are most likely off the roster.

The cap should be up by 5-$10M at that time too.

I wouldn’t have imagined Foligno would have been in such high demand on the free agent market. boy was I wrong.
They need a leader, vet presence. He’s getting paid to mentor Bedard and they can decide later whether he wants to try for a Cup team or not.

Yeah, they probably could have just waited 4 days to do the deal.

So are the flyers going scorched Earth? Traded Provorov, now Hayes, and rumors about moving Hart. If you’re intentionally tanking, why hire a guy like Torts who is supposed to motivate players, albeit with a shortish shelf life
Maybe they’re trading Torts too 😂

I am always amused when players who would probably NEVER sign with the Isles, like Hayes, Hall, TdA (not that I would want him with all of his baggage, but the skillset is needed) or players who used the Isles as a bargaining chip, like Panarin, are either dumped by their "dream" team or said team would love to be rid of them and aren't shy hiding their disdain (Drury clearly loathes Panarin).

Teams like Carolina, Vegas and the Rags readily spring to mind as repeat offenders.

Players like Patches, MA Fleury, Dadonov, Shattenkirk, McDonaugh (before being dumped to Tampa and then Nashville), Tim Erixon (a true cautionary tale), on back to Holik, Gomez, Redden, etc. are usually so giddy to either be traded or sign with these teams. But then they are dumped as soon as the next shiny toy comes through or they need a few $$$ in cap space.

Meanwhile you have the Isles with stability (although after years of turmoil, but the stink should be gone by now), solid ownership willing to spend, a new arena and top-notch practice facilities, a geographic mix of both proximity to NYC but also with a suburban and family feel (plus the Hamptons), who are not a desired destination.

Yet the Isles tend to cater to vets, even after they have clearly hit their expiration date, and will try to do right by them. Only usually moving them when there is no other reasonable alternative and a last resort.

When recruiting players, maybe the Isles need to be more vicious and remind these players how most of the high-end contracts end for players with some of these other teams. Because they don't seem to get it otherwise.

Sure that long-term contract seems great now, but how will the last several years play in Arizona or a team like a pre-Bedard Chicago? Maybe the Isles should hire a couple of these guys and wheel them out in negotiations.

So you are deciding between the Isles and the Rags and the Rags wont give you a NMC? Let me bring in Redden and Shattenkirk to talk to you and let you know how their "dream" signings went.

To help coerce/force some of these players out and take the temperature of who is willing to give their all vs. just going through the motions and collecting a paycheck?

Like you said, Torts is a heck of a motivator. If not on the ice, then as someone who will motivate most players to call their agent, demand a trade and keep U-Haul on speed dial.

Montreal giving up the 31st and 37th picks, plus a prospect, for Newhook is mind-boggling. He didn't step up with all of the injuries to Colorado and they are getting a couple prime assets for him.

In 82 games, Newhook had 30 points and a 2.3 point share. Wahlstrom had 16 points in 35 games and a 1.8 point share.

The Montreal GM is essentially paying a premium for "potential" and a draft spot. Stupid but there are always bottom-feeders seemingly hanging around just to help out teams like Colorado.

I would postulate that Coors Light has a genetic alteration making GM's want to trade with Colorado . . .

Lol, well it is amazing how some GMs seem to bend to Sakic's will. Giving up a first and a second for a player who regressed mightily, doesn't look like a 2C and was a fourth liner by the playoffs? Definitely a different take. I was thinking a late second and maybe a third rounder, at most. But you just need to fool one dumb or desperate GM.

I don't think it's such a bad move for MTL, especially considering their context in the draft. They're now in a position to either stay put, and draft Reinbacher, or acquire additional assets as they trade down w/Washington to take the BPA at 8 + whatever else they acquire in that deal (at least Washington's 2nd, probably more).

I wonder whether Newhook will play on the wing in MTL.

While it is not a terrible move, it feels like an unnecessary overpay right now. If Newhook cannot play center, and gets moved to the wing, it feels even worse, at least to me.

Montreal gave up two solid assets for a player who regressed and couldn't fill a huge need for Colorado, which in turn exposed Compher as an overmatched 2C, while Newhook ultimately ended up on the fourth line and got worked in the playoffs.

I just don't have much hope that Newhook is going to blossom and thrive in Montreal, if he couldn't get it done with Colorado. And Sakic doesn't tend to give up on players he believes will perform.

Newhook feels like Jost 2.0 and Jost was ultimately claimed off waivers, after being traded to Minnesota for far less.
