The term is 2 years too long. The dollars are on par with Ryan Pulock's deal. They're both overpaid by over $1M.
Wait... if Severson is overpaid by $1M, that means Pulock isn't overpaid at all! ;)

So, if Lou comes to the conclusion that he's not going to (be able to) sign Mayfield, will we see him get something like this done?

Just grateful this wasn't us. Contract is a disaster.

I am shocked that Jarmo is still a NHL GM. Guy is awful.

At some point, you would think he might stop spending on wingers and defensemen, and focus on their real shortcomings down the middle and in net, while also focusing a bit more on player development.

I am very happy they did not win the right to drafts Bedard and should (hopefully) also miss out on Fantilli. No need to bail out Jarmo for his blatant shortcomings.

Unless something goes awry, I assume they will draft a center from the next tier and then try to rush them to the NHL.

Setting the market for overpaid, underproducing defensemen is nothing to crow about. One mistake begat another.

Damon Severson should send a bottle of champagne to Pulock.
You said Severson and Pulock are paid the same and they're both overpaid by the same amount, which implies they're the same level as players. But Pulock is (much) better than Severson. That's all I was getting at. :)

No defenseman gets paid $6M for playing lockdown defense.

They underproduce about the same. They got paid about the same. That’s all I’m saying.

I gotta disagree here.

Kekalainen is very bold and he understands that he's in one of the blander markets out there. Clearly the owners give him the ok to be somewhat unconventional. The team stays active in many ways, on many fronts, and there are times where he's put everything into one bucket and then turned around after the undesired results and picked up a whole bunch of picks.

I'd call him savvy and fluid.

Yep, they've been weak up the middle in recent years, going into last season hoping that Roslovic would be for Gaudreau and Laine what Rucchin once was for Kariya and Selanne. But when Sillinger and Johnson fully arrive, that could look a bit different.

Exactly. They're picking 3rd and 34th in a couple of weeks. After taking two prime Dmen early in last summer's draft, all indications are that they'll be winding up with Fantilli, Carlsson, or Smith, prolly in that order of availability.

But I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they drop back a bit to grab Leonard or Moore.

So they fired a gallant and replaced with a gallant?

At least they know ahead of time what mediocre coaching they’ll be getting.

So Laviolette wouldn't have worked here either. Why did people want him then?
Because Isles fans love nostalgia. Absent the 13-1-1 run, his first season coaching the Isles went .500 rest of the way and lost in the first round. So, hot streak, then mediocre, then a nasty losing first round.

It was apparent back at that time that something wasn’t working internally in that locker room, whether player only or player and coach. Not much has been said about it in all these years of blog casting either.

Didn't people say the same thing when they won the lottery, had high picks, signed Fox, Panarin, etc.?
I didn’t…but now they have the pieces in place AND a coach who is known for getting things done quickly WITH cup experience. Feel free to save my post if you want. 1-3 years and the rags are in the cup finals with laviolette at the wheel.
