One more thing to add. While Dubas was clearly taken to the woodshed in negotiations by Matthews, Marner, Nylander, etc., the one thing that bothered me was the short term on Matthews specifically. Letting him walk to UFA.

It is one thing to cave on money, but at least get the extra years in your favor. Dubas did not.

But, Matthews as a free agent one year after his contract is up, very good timing if you are looking to potentially capitalize on the relationship down the line and help promote your cause as well.

Ultimately, Matthews will do what is best for himself. That is the kind of person he seems to be. But Dubas still might be able to benefit if their intentions align.
He gave Matthew’s years, money and not only money but signing bonus. I don’t think they even negotiated

NHL.com is doing a 60 greatest draft picks series and just did the first installment of 51-60. They have Billy Smith at #54 (5th round pick, 59th overall, by LA in 1970). In the blurb about Smitty I noticed:

"During those championship runs, the goalie was 57-13 in the playoffs, and the Islanders never lost more than two games in winning 16 straight playoff series."

I then checked the 1984 playoffs and the same was true (until the finals, of course). Granted, the first round back then was best of 5 games, and during the 19 series streak the Isles won 2 of those series 3-2 (PIT in '82 and NYR in '84), but in the other best of 5 series they lost either 1 or 0 games. And, most significantly, in the 7 game series (14 of them) they never were stretched to a 7th game. Pretty remarkable.

So it has been reported that Dubas tried to end "the Shanaplan" and it blew up in his face.

Not exactly surprising that when you try to bypass and cut the knees out from under your boss, who the MLSE board clearly likes because he maintains a healthy bottom line, you are going to lose.

Dubas clearly wanted more power and, probably, insulation against Matthews potentially leaving, because someone will take the fall if he goes. Once that NMC kicks in, all of the power resides with Matthews, as he can walk to UFA.

Right now, Shanahan has almost zero leverage. His only recourse is to overwhelm Matthews with an offer in terms of $$$ that no sane person could refuse. If they can't get him to sign before the NMC kicks in, they are in real trouble. To the point where you have to at least explore trade options.

I fully expect Dubas to land at whatever job/location has the most enticing pool of talent AND where he can potentially lure Matthews and/or maybe Nylander or Marner down the line.

Pittsburgh is an easy fit, with Crosby as a draw and less pressure than Toronto, but it will require some work clearing out some of the dead wood/$$$ over the nest year and maybe a nice tank job (easy to do when the goaltending is in disarray) to secure one more premium prospect. All standard operating procedure for the Penguins.

I guess Ottawa could be in the mix, in order to get in before new ownership takes over and they have a lot of young talent, but would they be able to sign a star UFA? I don't know. Depends on how players view Ottawa.

Such a shame though that Toronto will probably need to overpay yet again, making them even more top-heavy, make a tough trade or see a star walk for nothing. You hate to see it.

And the NMC in the last year…
I'm not really interested in the soap opera, but I find a few things interesting:

- The Matthews situation is shaping in a way that is extremely analogous to the John Tavares situation. It's going to be very interesting viewing!

- If it's true that Dubas was fired for trying to get a more free hands in decisions, that - regardless of how anyone feels about him or Shanahan - means that the responsibility for bad decisions (or missed opportunities) is shared.

The real store imo just is how the Tavares signing screwed everything up in a very predictable way. I mean, you don't have to be a genius to realize that the Leafs were at a disadvantage whenever Riley wasn't on the ice. Going with retread vets was a direct result of their salary allocation problem.

Not worth reviving, but this is what happens when a team tries to make a "splash", it works for a quick "Wow effect" and then fades pretty fast. To this day, I just don't understand what they were looking to get out Tavares. Yeah they have a "stacked" team on paper, but the guy was/has been quickly overshadowed by a good portion of the roster.

Either way, it seemed like he was going to Toronto. So, I don't think there was anything that was stopping that move.

Tavares is looking very much like the Carmelo Anthony of hockey - biggest success came before a pro career, became a very good pro compiler with deficiencies, made a hyped move to his home city, but had very little success in the playoffs over a long career.
