It is not even close

Eh its close-ish.

Byfield is a great talent who will do really, really well where ever he ends up. The size/speed/skill package is really rare.

Laf is no shrimp though. He's powerful, skilled and will go through you if he can't go around you. Thats an intangible we lack (and our org loves) and really something we need more of.

Im excited to say the least! After "life" was out of the way yesterday i totally forgot the draft lottery was last night until i saw Spittin Chicklets post about it on FB.

Needless to say we havent had this kind of draft pick in YEARS but lets temper our expectations a bit. We are basically drafting based on potential, but Stefan, Yakupov and others all had potential and we see how they turned out.

Its quite unlikely he is going to go down that path, but to say its impossible.....there is precedent.

Bravo to the NHL for not sending this kid the Pacific Northwest in Edmonton.

Health of the NHL

- Biggest Cities on the Coast lines get the top two picks NY and LA
- Big City Chicago wins a playoff Series
- Emerging power in Philadelphia has arrived
- Boston and Washington are aging but two of the best

For Canada
- Habs wina Series
- Ottawa should get a facelift with two top picks

Looking good

There are busts at EVERY draft position.

There are fewer at #1 than there are at any other slot.

agree, Laf isn’t the Hughes sized kid who admits he needs to work on his shot and the Rangers land the bigger Kakko. Laf is a good sized kid.

There are no words. For a franchise like ours, having the #2 pick be an appetizer of the #1 pick the following year is like... being struck by a lightning bolt WHILE BEING struck by the first lightning bolt.

No wait. It's like flipping a coin three times and seeing it land on its head three times!

to be fair, Willy, once you've been struck once, you're susceptible to another strike

The only thing worrying me a little bit about Laf is seeing that Drouin put up very similar numbers in the Q and that didn’t exactly translate

My daughter had stopped over for dinner last night. She just shared a video of me when the Rangers ball bounced to the top. Not embarrassed to say I was squealing like a girl getting a pony.

My wife said she hasn't heard that since Mookie Wilson hit that ball to Buckner. (She had no idea about either player or what game it was. She refers to it as the time my brother in law and I were dancing in the living room.)

And another thought Anyone wake up this morning thinking the comments by Jeff about needing to be much tougher to play against based off the play in series where we were badly out structured/coached may be looking more at Quinn than guys on the roster? Or along with guys on the roster? Again there are two and imo will be 3 very good coaches avail this offseason in gallant Laviolette and I think Sullivan eventually

From watching his interview on MSG network Alexis looks and acts like a man already at 18 which is very very helpful for someone making the jump from juniors to pro. He oozes maturity and he looks physically there. If you look at guys like Miller, Kravtsov and Chytil for instance you can still see a bit of the kid there--just their look and just the way they act though with Miller and Chytil they are like men/children--they're physically very strong though speaking of Filip he'll be a better player when he realizes how strong he is. Nils Lundkvist looked like a boy when we drafted him but in the past couple years he's shed most of that.

Byfield is a tough one because he’s so young. He’s basically a year younger than Lafreniere but what Lafreniere did this past season was so ridiculous it’s almost impossible to touch. He’s pulled away from everyone else and that’s in a super deep draft.
Yep, and as great as Byfield is, he isn’t even the consensus number 2 guy, while Laf is so far and away number 1 per Bob’s scouts, which we KNOW we are a part of.

Dear everyone reading this board,

We're not trading the #1 overall pick. It would take an amplified Lindros trade offer (not the one Quebec took from Philly but the better offer from the NYR) and even then, we're not in the same dire need to replace half our team, plus, Quebec was forced to move him. You don't trade Lafreniere; you count your lucky stars everything aligned like it did for us to draft him. Feel free to discuss other avenues to fill our needs at center.

Oh, and the LAK are taking Byfield to replace their aging centers.

can Laf play Center? I would love that.
It’s interesting that he doesn’t play center honestly. He’s a puck distributor and a guy who has insane vision. Those are typically attributes of centers.

Has he historically not played center just so that he doesn’t have as much defensive responsibility and is more free to create? I don’t see anything preventing him from playing the position otherwise. He’s not being held back by size.
