They're finally going to do an exciting version of the draft lottery, and I am going to miss it for work. Unless I quit in the next two hours... tough call.

Honestly, as long as it isn't Toronto I can live with the rest. But that New York team would be my first choice.

The Pens have an equal chance at 12.5% with none greater or worse than the field. When comparing that 12.5% “traditional route” they would have to be ranked 3rd worst to have odds close to 12.5% (they would be at 11.5% if 3rd worst)

At #16 their odds under a “traditional route” would have been 1% with everybody having better odds. Tonight they’re at 12.5% and everybody is equal.

I guess the question is whether it is fair that all these 8 teams have the same odds. I guess it's strange times, but it would seem that the team that missed the playoffs and finished with the 8th worst record should have a better shot than the team that finished 15th overall, no?

Minnesota or Florida are also reasonable landing spots. The Wild suck and Florida will need a new star to build around after they have to trade Barkov and/or Huberdeau because their ownership is hemorrhaging money.

They'll just trade Lafreniere because they're hemorrhaging money.

Well, that’s a different question. We see teams who had a high run rate drop in the seedings based on a Round Robin and teams headed towards the playoffs get upended by teams that may not have made the playoffs. Now we have Regular season teams who should have made the playoffs based on a run rate competing for the Top Pick overall while the bottom feeders look on.

edit - actually at#16 they would have 0%. #15 has a 1% shot

Combine both lotteries and it's a 3% chance. I don't know why they're all given the same chance in this one.

That works both ways, though. A team like Pittsburgh that was guaranteed a spot in the playoffs had to play to get in. Giving them worse odds would be an extra kick in the teeth. I think it's fair the way it is.
