So we're a year and a bit into the new wildcard system. How do you guys feel about it so far? Has it made the playoffs more interesting?
So you don't even think about addressing any real problems in the league, but the hockey playoffs (arguably the best in pro sports), yeah don't like that let's do something different.
I like it fine right now, but eventually a 9th best team in a conference is going to get into the playoffs based on the guarantee that the top 3 in a division get in. When that happens, I will likely be hating it.
Hate it. The better seed should play the worst seed 1-8. Montreal and TB were 3/4 last year but had to play each other instead of a 5/6 matchup with a "lesser" team.
They want division rivalry but this is garbage.

Playoffs are where rivalries are created. The way it is set up, you have to make the conference finals to gain a new conference rival. Upsets won't happen to the same degree either. "4 beats 1" doesn't have the same feel as "8 beats 1". Watching the Oilers beat the Red Wings in '06 and the Sens almost upset the Rangers in 2012 is what playoff hockey is all about; now, that can't really happen (not to the same extent).
I still don't like it. It forces rivalry games. If two rival teams meet up, great, but it doesn't need to be forced.
Last year playing the Flyers was great. This year playing probably the Islanders will be great. In 5 years when it's still some combination of the same few teams it's gonna get really old.
