New-look Maple Leafs ready to take next step in 'Shanaplan'

This part of the story I think stands out the most.

Following the five-game play-in loss to Columbus in August, Shanahan surveyed the direction of the team with general manager Kyle Dubas and head coach Sheldon Keefe. They felt they had too many offensive-minded players and not enough that made life difficult on opponents when the puck was at the other end of the ice.

“We had an abundance in one area and maybe it lacked in a different area,” said Shanahan, while noting that it set the stage for a busy off-season.

They shipped Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson out in separate trades that freed up enough cap room to pursue Thornton, Simmonds, Bogosian, T.J. Brodie and others in free agency.

There was an emphasis placed on experience, presence, leadership and improved defensive play.

Nothing gets passed these guys. That's why they make the big bucks.

KOSHAN: For Shanahan, Leafs growth comes from within supplemented by off-season changes | Toronto Sun

“We know that we have also a lot of skilled players that not only can play well defensively, but are developing that side of their game so that we can become a team that’s more difficult to score against. That’s an important part of our growth.”

As for the Leafs as a whole and competing for 56 games in the all-Canadian North Division? Shanahan wouldn’t take the bait and declare that the Leafs will win the division, even though more than a few prognosticators figure that will happen (including this one).

“You focus on the day that you’re in,” Shanahan said. “Sheldon identified a few things (during the off-season), he had a hand in some of the players that were brought in, he was looking at some of the things that he felt our team lacked."

“There was also focus on the players that were coming back, the growth of them, on habits that we feel can bring you success in the regular season — you’re not going to have 56 excellent games in a row, every week isn’t going to be your best week, we realize that. If you look back at Stanley Cup champions, they don’t always have impeccable seasons without adversity."

“(Keefe’s) messaging from the beginning of camp is done with the intention of having a very strong regular season. I think we can become a more consistent team. That’s important.”

Shanahan is remaining firm to the idea that the adversity the Leafs have endured in recent years (going nowhere in the playoffs) will serve them well. At the same time, the overall vision of the club has not veered when obstacles have arisen.
