I agree this is pretty much a toss-up. Niedermayer gets the nod from me for the 2003 cup win, and the Conn Smythe he should've won that year.I really think that Elias did more as a Devil than Niedermayer did. Other than that, this is my list.
I just don't see how any Devils forward other than Elias gets on this list over MacLean. I suppose there's a pretty good argument for Holik, but Kovalchuk, Mogilny, Parise, Muller aren't close to leapfrogging MacLean in my book.
If we're talking the most skilled players ever to play on the Devils, then Peter Stastny has to be on the list over either of Kovalchuk or Mogilny, along with Fetisov and Jagr.I guess it depends on how you factor in longevity and pure talent and skill in "top player". I went with skill since Kovalchuk and Mogilny are probably two of the most skilled players to ever wear a Devils jersey. However, MacLean has obviously done a lot more for this team than either Kovalchuk and Mogilny.
