Those of you who have been around a while know that I do this every year. I started it after the team's 23rd season, when there were enough years in the team's history to fill a full roster. I find it's a good distraction and helps bring back good memories.
The rules:
You're making a roster of 23 players from Devils history. To do this, you select a player from a season in the team's history (so, one player from 2000-2001, which means you can have either Elias' season from that year or Mogilny's, but not both). Each player gets to keep his jersey number, and you cannot have two players wearing the same number (meaning that you get to have either Driver or Gomez, but you cannot have both).
Each player wears the number he worse for the majority of his time as a Devil, no matter what year you select him from. So, if you take Rolston on your team, he wears #14 because as a Devil he wore that for more years than he wore #12.
You can use whatever standards you like when producing the team. I tend to account for both regular season and playoff performances, and certain players will always be on my team (Daneyko) even if I might be able to find superior single season performances.
It's much easier now than it used to be, because we have so many more years to play with. I'll post my team in a few minutes, I spent last night creating it to take my mind off Kovalchuk. It's a lot more like the teams I used to make the first few years I did this than my more recent teams, actually.
