Olympic Winter Games, Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament (9-25 February 2018)
Group A: Canada (1), Czech Republic (6), Switzerland (7), Korea (12)
Group B: Russia (2), USA (5), Slovakia (8), Qualifier 3
Group C: Sweden (3), Finland (4), Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2

These are pretty similar to the groups last time around - in group B at least. Canada vs. South Korea should be fun if NHLers are participating. :sarcasm:

And here's a full list of the new IIHF rankings (it's Wikipedia so we have to trust whoever did it until the IIHF officially releases it):

Can't wait for that Korea - Canada 15-0 beat down, so glad the NHL isn't going ... if the best 12 teams were participating it'd be one thing, but to have Korea as a lock just kills the tournament

Yeah it is definitely pointing that way. Would love to see the Pros back in 2018. Team Canada would be even more better than the 2014 Team from my perspective.

It really is a pity. When I think about it, I think almost all teams would be better in 2018 than 2014. We Czechs finally have some good young guys comming up (Palat, Hertl, Pastrnak, Vrana, Jaskin, Sekac, Zacha, Kostalek, Zboril etc.), Finland seems to have a great new generation. And Canada and Sweden.. we don't even have to talk about them. It could be one hell of a tourney.

Depends on the format I guess. But if the IIHF still allows professional players and the KHL takes a two week break then yes. Russia is the heavy favorite.
If the NHL decides not to particpate, then it means exactly what it says on the tin - no NHLers. It does NOT mean that pro players in other leagues will be out.

Why some North Americans seem to think that the participation of other leagues somehow depends on the NHL's decision is beyond me.

It. Does. Not.

Feels like NHL players will play, why would otherwise the IIHF accept the return of the World Cup?

Also, as this is not an IIHF event, what says that Korea won't get some NHL or AHL player with Korean heritage (if there are any) to play for them? If I remember correctly, the two year "hockey naturalization rule" only applies during official IIHF events

The Olympics are an IIHF event and their rules for dual citizens apply to the Olympics.

As it affects the rankings, it's an IIHF event. However, I don't think that there are any players of Korean descent in the AHL, let alone NHL.

I just hope Sweden won't have to finish the tournament with Marcus Kruger as their 1C...

If the NHL choses not to release their players I think it is inevitabile that many players who could go from KHL to NHL will wait until 18/19 (example: Forsberg in -94). Also it could possibly mean that some already playing may bail and play in Europe in the 17/18 season.

Minus Canadian NHLers of course.

Canada ALWAYS gets stuck with the toughest Olympic grouping. :naughty:

same, it's ridiculous actually. Olympics should be worth 1500 points, World Championship 1200 IMO

I agree in principle, but that ranking is really only relevant for teams outside the "bigs" so who cares really. It means little or nothing for CAN, RUS, USA, CZE, SWE and FIN.

I feel like NHL participation will probably happen. I don't know if I want canada to lay down on Korea because they're the hosts playing their first tournament, or if I want to see the biggest beatdown in Olympic history.
