New GM Trades and Signings Part 2

He got most of those points with matthews and marner. That is gone now. He wont score that on the third line

Where did they post the lines? Also, it is crazy how he was a 40pt player before Matthews/Marner but he only was able to do it with them.

Nylander hypothetically being traded away as either a rental or as a signed player likely has to factor into this somehow.

Only way i give Nylander anything that starts with a $9M is if he accepts no signing bonus money and doesnt get trade protection.

Gone should be the days where these guys get short term deal, top money, get to sit out the season, get full signing bonus, and/or trade protection - all while playing for the centre of the hockey universe. 80-90% of the teams dont give their players all of these perks. So you are negotiating against yourself if you do.

The writing has been on the wall for Nylander ever since Marner got paid nearly 11M. Marner is better, but he's not 4M better.

Nylander is probably my favorite of the core 4 (not saying he's the most talented, just that personally I like him the most.) I'd prefer they trade Marner, but it's obvious at this point it'll be Nylander. They can't have four forwards making 10M+.

I agree with you that a trade should have been explored sooner.

I think Treliving will try to make it work if they can squeeze Nylander under 9M. Total speculation on my part, but I also wouldn't be surprised if the Matthews contract is mostly done and they're waiting to sign Nylander first (which is what Dubas should have done with Marner/Matthews.)

If they trade him, I just hope they're able to get a good partner for Rielly and a lesser forward for the top 6/9.

I imagine Tre has a deadline in mind for Nylander or he pulls the trigger on a trade. Willy’s camp is probably remaining firm to extract as much as they can from a deal. If they find out another team is willing to give over $10 mill, he’ll probably accept

Tre does not want another Gaudreau situation with that agent so I assume he’s more direct this time

It's sad that he wants 10 mil because you'd like to keep him but if this is true then you have to move him at this point. Can't keep him at that price when Marner and Matthews will probably do the same and ask for a raise as well, even with Tavares contract coming off the books soon. Give him a final offer of 9 mil and if he doesn't sign that then look for a trade partner.

The cap going up is more then enough to make up for the gap in negotiations. He's not worth 10 mil if Meier only got 8.8, so if that's what he wants then move him.
