New GM Trades and Signings Part 2

what about a 3 way trade?

:leafs Pesce and Anaheim's 3rd round pick

:canes Nylander

:ducks2Murray and Philadelphia's 2nd round pick (from Carolina)

Essentially Nylander for Pesce + Philly's 2nd (fills a positional need for both organizations) and then Toronto trades Philly's 2nd to Anaheim to dump Murray and get a 3rd in return (around the same cost to dump Mrazek). This helps with Anaheim reaching the cap floor as well.
Also clears cap to sign Samsonov and make another add up front.

seems like a win - win - win to me

Not nearly enough, I think Nylander is probably the 6th best RW in the league.

Pesce isn't top 20, maybe not top 30.

Pesce is a good player but I'm not sure a lot of the people around here that continually bring up his name have watched him play.

He would be an underwhelming return for Nylander. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to have him but a close to 1 for 1 trade of Nylander/Pesce would be disasterous for Toronto,

Yes - I like Pesce but Johansen+Hayes weren't worth their contracts, reputation issues.

Pesce and Necas might get my attention.

I think the Ducks could be a good fit - they have a lot of prospects, a lot of cap space (there are very few teams who are able to take on significant cap right now), and will be looking to turn the corner and become a competitve team.

Nylander for Nathan Gaucher + 2024 2nd + 2025 2nd

Keeping in mind that the extra cap space would basically mean you could add Tyler Bertuzzi to the above return as without the trade we wouldn't be able to fit him in, I would be fine with that type of trade.

Knies-Tavares-Jankrok
Domi-Kampf-Robertson
Holmberg-Lafferty-Reaves

We could then use one of those 2nds we to dump Murray, and use the extra cap to re-sign Samsonov and sign another middle six winger so we aren't relying on Robertson to play a top nine role.

Hayes and Johanson combined scored less goals and points than Nylander last season while each being paid more than him.

I’d rather retain on 50% on Nylander and pick up a return bigger than Horvat or Meier than settle for some of these lukewarm compromise deals.

If cap space is so valuable all of a sudden, Nylander at 3.5 mil must be one of the top assets in the league.

Compare those returns, and then talk about winning.

This is a huge L.

Attaching Murray to Nylander hurts his value.

We already added Bertuzzi
We can create cap space in other ways.

We'd need multiple 1sts or high end futures or valuable roster players to help us now.

This return is none of those things.

Devils got 2 1sts, a prospect taken in the 2nd and another prospect taken in the 1st recently.

So if the leafs can’t get what you consider fair value for Willy are you prepared to just play it out and let him walk for free next season?
 
The organization should have seen this coming with the Nylander extension talks. A move should have been made last offseason.

Willy is rightfully not going to accept a number in the $8m range while we give Matthews $14m on a short-term deal. I would go up to $9.5m with him. You can't pick and choose which players you ask to take team friendly deals. Not to mention he already feels slighted by how much more Marner is making than him.

Pastrnak just signed for 11.25M for 8 years and he posted 61 goals and 113 pts...maybe that puts Nylander at 9M for 8 years?

Nylander broke 40 goals for the first time this year
