Is Toews done?

He put up decent numbers last year playing almost 18 mpg. His hit numbers went way down, but that could be due to injury/not putting an effort on a tanking team. Won 63% of his faceoffs. Still averaged over a min/game on the pk for the Hawks.

At 35, might have another season in him. Could be a decent replacement for ROR if he signs for close to min.

I think the problem is Giordano. Obviously, his cap-hit isn't a huge concern because he gets paid so little but it's rather the notion that he's being 100% penciled in the lineup because of his name.

He looked abysmal and slow in the playoffs, especially in the panthers series. Its part of the reason keefe kept going to the 7 D tactic. He's washed and him retiring would help us not only get rid of his 900K cap hit (ever penny helps) but also clear up some logjam back there

Giordano is done
Giordano stepped up like a hero when they were very short on defense during the 1st half of the season. With proper rest (and not being used 20+ minutes per night) he can still be a very effective player. If we were dropping all the players that looked spent in the 2nd round again Florida... we'd be replacing everyone.

Off topic since it doesn't really matter anymore, but there was a notion ROR left because he didn't like Keefe's coaching, however Mirtle was on with JD on his podcast and he looked into it, and said it wasn't true. Keefe wasn't the reason ROR left.
Some assume it was Keefe’s coaching, some think it is the mentality of certain players and it could be both.
One interesting thing we have been hearing is there seem to be a divide in the locker room, think some mentioned that a few players stated there is the core and everybody else, then Treliving came out and said the medias should not target core four…then you have Reaves saying he heard the room is quiet and think if there is little groups, that should not be the case and everyone should do things together.
These little bits here and there definitely showed there is some sort of locker room drama but it happens in pro sports. Don’t think it is a toxic environment but definitely something to improve on.

Arizona has so many picks/prospects. I wonder if Nylander would consider AZ as a place to sign long term if something can't be worked out here.

They did just spend some decent money this summer. Their GM has said they want to ostary building up.

We know there are certain groups, for example the Swedes, Nylander, Sandin, Engvall, Jarnkrok and Liljegren went out together.

Maybe they need to get away from that?

Less emphasis on core 4 would also be good.

He had covid health complications and so there might be concerns there. Maybe he waits until Dec/Jan and signs with a contender or something.

Eh, I don't think it's a particularly attractive place for any star player to sign at the moment if they were to have alternative options

Wasn't Gio himself contemplating retirement after playoffs?

I think he's done. Everyone looks good first half of the season and when you play teams like Ottawa, Montreal and Buffalo
But game in game out in playoffs is a different beast

I appreciate that he stepped up against Tampa 2nd game and took on Bogo. But even against Tampa he looked cooked.

And there's no shame in that. He had a heck of a career

Do you think he's the guy that will just chase the bag or would he leave any $ on the table?

Arizona or another shitty team is willing to offer 9-9.5M but Toronto would give him 8.8M, would he think "200-700k over 7-8 years is a lot of money, I am leaving"

He's over 35, we'd need him to LTIRETIRE

I know Kane has said that he's going to wait until he is healthy. When he does decide to sign, I wonder what the AAV is going to look like. If he going to take a 1x1 to try to win?

If so, would be very cool to add a 1x1 Kane to this lineup in November/December. It's been widely reported that he has wanted to play with Matthews. Could be a nice treat down the line.

I thought someone posted a day or two ago in here that this rule had been changed.

Maple Leafs Media Availability | Brad Treliving | July 3, 2023

Toronto Maple Leafs

July 3, 2023

General Manager Brad Treliving speaks to the media from Development Camp on Monday.

What challenge lies ahead for you with the salary cap gymnastics?

Treliving: We’ve locked [Pridham] in the room there and we are not letting him out with no food or water until he really finds results.

We are not as concerned as everybody else is. We have the LTI position, so we were able to do the things we did yesterday. We continue to look for opportunities for us.

Despite a busy few days, especially with William Nylander and Auston Matthews’ situations, would you agree there is still a lot to do?

Treliving: Oh yeah, lots to do. I don’t think you are ever done. We were in there today looking at different opportunities. Now, it might not necessarily be a pure free-agent signing, but now you are looking at the trade market. You are always looking at ways to make the team better.

Certainly, Auston and William are priorities. We continue the dialogue and hopefully get to a good end result.

Would you like to change the mix on the defense?

Treliving: I think I have been open and honest in saying I like long D. We still look at that.

With John, we are able to move pucks. He brings an offensive element.

It is still a work in progress there. At the end of the day, you are not going to accomplish everything in two or three days or one summer. We will continue to look at opportunities there.

Am I crazy or would a Nylander+Lil for Pesce and Jarvis trade, and a subsequent Zadorov acquisition solve all of our problems?

Trade frees up around $3.7 mil in cap, which is what Zadorov will be paid.

Morgan-Pesce
Zadorov-Brodie
Mccabe-Klinberg

That seems rock solid.

I think for that level he'd probably sign with the better team. If it was like 2 million per year it might be a different story.

An 8 year deal would basically negate the higher aav of a 7 year deal by 1-1.2 mil alone in terms of overall money owed which is an advantage for the leafs
