I do get nervous about the idea of trading Nylander. Part of knows it's time to probably do it but... if they miss the mark on that, it will really really really hurt.

I just don't know how you can move on and make it work cap wise without it.

Yep it's extremely scary because he is one of the more talented players in the league and it feels like he still might not have reached his ultimate ceiling.

Can we somehow get a similar return to what WPG did with Dubois tho? Because now looking at that trade they did so well in my opinion and if we could make a similar trade but instead have the centerpiece be a young defenseman along with 2-3 very intriging pieces it could work out.

I highly doubt Treliving has interest in keeping things that tight.

You simply can't carry a 20 man roster full season. And the only way you get relief from injured players is if they are going to be out 10 games/24 days or more. So if someone has a minor injury, we have to play short players before being allowed to use emergency recalls.
Dubas did that sort of thing all time. A 20-21 man roster and emergency recalls were the norm with him. It's not ideal, but a game short a man doesn't hurt you that much when the team is stacked with talent.

Maybe, Lafferty gets moved and you replace him with a 775K deal and you gain a few hundred thousand that way or Samsonov comes in at 3.5 instead and you gain some more there and you can fit another player. Maybe, you trade Brodie and sign Dumba at 3M per for 1 year and gain some roster flexibility that way. Maybe, they move Nylander because he won't agree to terms. Still early yet. But, I think a 20 man roster is the most likely scenario looking at cap friendly and it doesn't feel that different to past years.

Every people asking for this team to be less soft, playing with more attittude but complain because bring that kind of player having a cost

Nylander is softness leafs player and sorry the fact he producing points ( most of them with a men advabtage) doesn't change anything about him. Bertuzzi in 7 game with Boston had more 5v5 goal than nylander in his last 18.

Domi in his last 19 game had 4 assist over nylander at 5v5 than nylander last 18...

And the reason why, its because nylander is soft, hes affraid to get hit or going on traffic... so hes struggle to create himself some space at 5v5... but everything is right with a men advantage or even at 4v4 because hes able to create himself some space with his speed/agility and puck control.

Not sure trading nylander would hurt lewfs that much come playoff time...

Send Nylander to Pittsburgh (yeah, I know) to play with his little brother. They have an abundance of right-handed D.

If we can get a package which include a young top 6 C and a top 4 dman back, then I think its an all around win for the organization.

Basically Wright + would be a target package. Hes probably 3C or a top 6 winger next year but ultimately will shift Tavares to the wing with time.

This is why I would target a futures package for any return. Gives you ammo, a fresh look to target someone else, and restocks the cupboards. A Tkachuk, Hall or Kadri level trade return always seems to be so hard on one team.

At this point, we have as many questions about the roster, as we have answers. How to get cap compliant being the first, how are we going to deal with Matt Murray, signing Samsonov the first.

Second is what is actually going on with the Nylander negotiations? Media rumours are not the most reliable, but it's easy to see why people gravitate to moving him, when we have a cap issue. Like a few others, moving Nylander makes me nervous, as I doubt doing so actually improves the team immediately. But, we shall see..

Next the defense. This was rumoured to be the biggest thing Treliving was going to change... and so far he's brought in only Klingberg, who has been decent offensively, and terrible defensively. Clearly this is a pretty soft group right now, without the type of size you'd like. Brodie and McCabe didn't work well together against Florida, but Brodie is still a very good defensive guy. Moving Brodie gives us some cap flexibility, but then you have to replace what he brought defensively, if you are moving him to get bigger. Moving out Brodie for Zadorov improves the size, but degrades the quality.

Personally, I would have liked the team to have become more physical, and really Domi and Klingberg aren't that. Bertuzzi isn't bad, so that's a positive.

But, there will be changes, and at this point, is so speculative as to know what is going to happen. Even looking at a roster on paper, you never know how it's going to work out... we might think it's a downgrade, and then they play and are improved... or the opposite..

Weird signing. I mean as AHL depth I’d be okay with it but I don’t see him pushing anyone out of the lineup and he played 60 game each of the last 2 years I don’t see him wanting to play in the minors most of the year

He's probably going to get a lot of money regardless if he plays in the NHL or AHL I'd bet. Lagesson for example was making 55k in the AHL last year but with his new contract with the Leafs he'll be making 450k. He's a depth player at best. Many of these players are getting squeezed so sometimes you have to take whatever opportunity that comes up.

I mean he probably doesn't sign if he isn't fine with being in the minors. He has been a healthy scratch for 2 years on a bad Ottawa team. He doesn't really get wants. He is depth.

Fair enough. He is fine as depth if he is good with playing in the AHL all year.

An own rental swap idea:

Carolina gets: William Nylander + TJ Brodie (combined $11.9M)

Toronto gets: Teuvo Teravainen + Brett Pesce (combined $9.4M)

This deal plus the Murray buyout gives the leafs enough to pay Samsonov and also enough to run a 23 man roster and possibly even accrue cap space.

Upside: Overall defensive impact of Pesce + TT is greater than what they'd lose.

Downside: Lose a 40 goal scorer and the best player in the trade.
