It seems like there is a divide in understanding what a lot of fans want. Its less “physical”/“hitting” and more attitude and compete.

I don’t really think we are looking for guys who will run you over because I think that naturally comes in playoff hockey for most guys. We want phsycopaths who might just sucker punch a guy for no reason. Or a guy who can play on Matthews wing and bloody a guy up if he slashes him wrong.

It seems like Jeffler isn’t getting that based on his tweets

The Leafs are cap compliant if they trade Murray's full cap hit and they run a 20 man roster with Samsonov around a 4M cap hit. Which means Timmins would need to be waived or traded. Holmberg and Robertson can go down to the minors without the threat of waivers, saving McMann at forward, for now.

The deal to make if there is no Nylander trade, would seem to be Murray (full cap hit) + Timmins (sweetner) for future considerations.

If they did the Murray/Timmins trade, I'd look at Foote to replace him as the #7 defenseman, 2 years at 800K per season, but he is waived and starts with the Marlies.

Gambrell is probably getting some league minimum contract from some NHL organization to reclaim his NHL career probably in the AHL. He's probably a PPG in the AHL. It's possible that he signed with the Leafs.
The Marlies do need some C’s… plus depth in case of injuries.

Yep. Makes a lot of sense for those reasons. They definitely need more center depth.

Dumba should be the leafs next target.

Rielly Dumba
Brodie Klingberg
McCabe -------------
Gio
So everyone realizes Giordano is playing full timer right ?

Brodie will be gone for cap savings so McCabe moves up

Lilegren will play

Timmons to Pittsburgh for Friedman

Dumba 1 yr 3 million

With Klingberg, I got no interest in Dumba. We need someone with size, physicality and who can actually play defence.

Rielly - Zadorov
McCabe - Klingberg
Brodie - Liljegren
#7 Giordano

Zadorov can play either side and has a sneaky good shot from the point. Address’ multiple needs back there.

Dumba is very physical.

The Leafs should trade their best defensive D man to get old man Gio and another defensive train wreck in Dumba into the lineup?

Big mistake imo

Zadorov and hanifin
I mean if anyone knows these guys it our gm so if that’s what we need let’s go

I still want hllybuyck desperatly
Give them Murray Samsonov and a 1st or whatever
They can buy out Murray and reta on hallybuuck
Just go for it this year

It looks like we're going to get to the point where a couple $100k is going to make a world of a difference, so other than Murray, I'd have Lafferty and Timmims (possibly as sweeteners to Murray) as most likely to go to create the wiggle room. Moving off of both players to a league min player creates about $700k in space to secure a Samsonov extension.

With Lafferty, you hardly have to go external and could just lean on Holmberg/McMann/Steeves to do the job. Maybe add a Noah Gregor or Axel Jonsson-Fjallby into the mix to make the competition just a little greater.

With Timmins, you're looking external again. One guy I wonder about is Cal Foote. He hasn't been impressive to date, but I wonder if they think he can grow into a better version of a Schenn/Lyubushkin type still. Anyways, if the budget is $800k for this 7/8 D replacement, it may be best to add two more guys still that you feel good about. I'm not sure they want to rely on Niemela there, and I'd aim a little higher than guys like Lajoie, Lagesson, and Rifai if possible.

Physicality could also easily mean something like this.

Player enters offensive zone and has a step on the defender on the outside.

He can either...

1.) Curl back, control possession and look to hit the trailing forward in the middle or pass back to point.

2.) Put their head down, exploit the fact you have a open lane and take the puck right to the front of the crease.

With the second option, you're much more likely to take some physical damage whereas the first option if you're good at it, you can usually avoid taking that much of a toll physically. Sometimes being a physical player can actually mean you're the one taking alot of physical damage to get to where you want to on the ice.

I do get nervous about the idea of trading Nylander. Part of knows it's time to probably do it but... if they miss the mark on that, it will really really really hurt.

I just don't know how you can move on and make it work cap wise without it.

I'm struggling with it as well, because you'd be trading forty goals off the roster and creating a big gap on that second line.

If we do move him, hopefully there's at least one significant future piece involved, along with a roster player that can potentially slide into the top six. I'm not sure if that really makes us any better, though, but I'd have more comfort with a constellation of cost-controlled assets rather than a move that attempts to "swap" Nylander for defenseman.

I wonder if Nylander would be open to a 2 year team friendly deal that would allow us to sign him to a more lucrative extension once Tavares is off the books.

Yes, with Muzzin on LTIR, Murray and Timmins moved and Robertson and Holmberg demoted, with Samsonov on a 4M contract. The Leafs would have 190K in cap space with a 20 man roster.

I highly doubt Treliving has interest in keeping things that tight.

You simply can't carry a 20 man roster full season. And the only way you get relief from injured players is if they are going to be out 10 games/24 days or more. So if someone has a minor injury, we have to play short players before being allowed to use emergency recalls.

If we can get a package which include a young top 6 C and a top 4 dman back, then I think its an all around win for the organization.

Basically Wright + would be a target package. Hes probably 3C or a top 6 winger next year but ultimately will shift Tavares to the wing with time.
