EliteProspects has the Leafs signing Carl Dahlstrom for two more years.
Pardon me: through 25/26 so three years

Marchment was terrible for Dallas last year despite getting first and second line minutes an PP time.

Why would the Leafs want to pay his 4.5 mil salary for 11 goals?
Comtois was shit for Ducks as well. I don't know, you would hope that they could replicate their past form in a new setting.

Players coming off good years are usually quite hard to get, which is why you need to take a chance here and there.

But I'd still much rather look at those than give Domi or Bertuzzi 7 year contracts.

If you can sign Bertuzzi at 7 years 5 per who says no? I think that is a reasonable deal that ages alright with the cap raising going forward.
That’s insane , do you know nothing about Bertuzzi injury history or his skating ? He has 2-3 years left in him tops , and that’s with him playing 50-60 games a season.

From Kyle Cushman.

Appears player development consultant Darryl Belfry is no longer with the Maple Leafs. He's not listed on the team management page anymore.

Doesn't take sides yet he posts totally misleading numbers. Those 79 goals aren't 79 goals scored for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2022-23. That number includes goals scored for other teams before those players were acquired by the Leafs.

Lost to free agency (goals):
Bunting (23)
Kerfoot (10)
Holl (2)
ZAR (10)
O'Reilly (4)
Acciari (4)

Gustafsson (0)
Benn (1)
Hollowell (0)
Mete (0)
Simmonds (0)
Schenn (1)
Zohorna (1)
Kral (0)

Total: 56 goals

Feeling as scared as by that tweet?

Every one of those above players will have their ice time replaced by another flesh and blood profession athlete wherever on the depth chart. They have not been replaced by just Ryan Reaves and John Klingberg and their collective 15 goals.
I bolded the players who were team regulars while with the club. Some did replace other departed regulars: Engvall - 12 goals (Acciari), Sandin - 4 goals (McCabe) so I'll be generous and change the total to 72 even though those players did not leave through free agency.

Counting the contributions of 7 post trade deadline regulars then comparing that to the contributions of 2 initial free agent signings is wholly disingenuous and just a scare tweet. Who are the other 5 players replacing these 72 - 15 = 57 goals? We don't know yet. We've literally got to come up with 5 players who average about 11 goals each. A distribution of 20, 15, 10, 7, 5 would make up that number.
Knies + Robertson = goals

I don’t like the term but if the cap goes to $100M in 4 years, you will have Berruzzi at $5M for 3 more years which is the equivalent of a $3.75M last year. If he is a consistent 50 point scorer, then it’s a very good contract. But still some risk.

I always thought he was a power forward who hits. He had the same amount of hits as Kerfoot last year.

In the end you have no one locked up past 3 years except for Rielly, term really shouldn’t bother this team.

Ya Bertuzzi is no Noel Acciari. Acciari is a guy that runs around bumping into guys on the boards every game and that inflates his hit totals. Bertuzzi is more of a rat who picks his spot and lays the occasional crushing hit.

Obviously, if he plays like Acciari with his back issues he’s going to end up in a wheelchair.

People say things about envying carolinas structure. People say things like we have plenty of flexibility. People are saying they want free agents signed and term is ok.

If you want real flexibility and want to emulate others perxeived cap magic dont give out long term mid money on non core talented players unless it is very niche and valuable.

The guys left arent doing that

You want real flexibility - see what we got internally this year.. start the pipeline ffs.. domi and bertuzzi can go and get their 40 and 50 points somewhere else for 4 to 5 years..

Trade Nylander for picks and prospects and then use those picks and prospects for a trade for Konecny and Murray trade. Sign Bertuzzi and Domi.

Which teams meet all of the following criteria?
1. Nylander would want to sign a contract extension.
2. Team would want to sign Nylander to a huge ticket.
3. Has the assets required to make the deal.

Possibly Calgary…. Possibly New York…..

Any chance we can swing McBain from Arizona?

I would love him as the 3C.

Robertson + Murray for the rights of McBain

Sign Bertuzzi at 5x$5.25 mill
Sign Domi at 2x$3 mill
Sign McBain at 2x$2 mill
Sign Samsonov at 1x$3.2 mill

Knies-Matthews-Nylander
Bertuzzi-Tavares-Marner
Domi-McBain-Jarnkrok
Lafferty-Kampf-Reaves

Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Klingberg
Gio-Liljegren

Samsonov
Woll

Knies + Robertson = goals
Not counting my eggs before they hatch but there's also Lafferty (10 goals before joining the team), McMann (21 goals in 30 AHL games), a full season of Holmberg possibly, probably 2 or 3 more forwards to be signed from somewhere. Whether these players will be fully rounded players and make the team as good or better than last season, who knows? But more likely than not, scoring is not going to be an issue next season.

Do people realize Bertuzzi had 8 goals in 50 games last year ? He doesn’t play an overly physically game, and while he can be a pest sometimes he doesn’t really play that roll a lot anymore.

Ya he had a brutal season last year but he dealt with alot of injuries (which should be a concern).

He also scored 30 goals the season before.

26 points in 28 games for Boston playing in a similar role he’d be playing in here. He’s 28, not 33.

What’s the alternative? Punt the season and overpay someone else next year in FA when the cap goes up?

Although we haven't seen any good signings yet hope is not entirely lost. There should be some worthwhile bodies in a couple of months with waiver dumps. Some of these teams have a lot of bodies that they cannot sign. They will expose some people and there maybe some nice young players there for cheap

Well if the Leafs punted the season, there'd be more to whine about on these boards. Some people in this thread might like that.

“Can’t believe Treliving didn’t address the LW position!”

“Treliving flat out made this team worse! Terrible allocation of the cap!”

“Why’d we let Bunting walk!?!?”

“We didn’t sign anybody which means no one wants to come to Toronto! Toxic dressing room/culture!”

“Matthews is going to walk because Treliving failed to ice a competitive team!”

“Shanahan is a mess! Shouldn’t have let Dubas go!”

I'd sign off on a single season investment in Bertuzzi but beware anything longer term.

I feel the same way about Domi whose effectiveness has oscillated. Domi in my opinion has the raw skills to be an effective 3rd line match up center if he didn't fancy himself so much as a star player type. In the past offensive players have literally seen the light in their late 20's and taken on the challenge of a role. But that was before the age of the multi-million dollar retirement contract. I think at this stage in his career Domi isn't even considered an average defensive player which is a shame. The allure of money and the spotlight can ruin player realization.
