There are no decent FA defensmen left on the market. The only way they can pick up a top 4 guy is to make a trade and that tradable asset is Nylander. They have about $6M left in cap once you include the LTIR of Muzzin. Murray is gone too so that could free up another $4.6M giving them about $10.5M in cap space allowing them to sign both Domi and Bertuzzi.

Where's the cap hit for what you get back for Nylander in this scenario?

Samsonov still needs a contract as well. However, I'd be open to moving him.

Dumba is in decline but might be an option. You‘d still need to make a trade anyway to fit him in especially if they sign Domi or Bertuzzi.

I just don't think they provide that much help and the term of those contracts will come back to bite whomever signs them.

I think his offensive skillset is legit. He's not a PPG player obviously but he does have good hands and quality finishing ability and if placed into our skilled lineup someone that should score you 25 to possibly 30 goals.

Rather than commit the term to sign him.

Take a chance on Comtois instead or see if you can get Marchment back on the cheap from Dallas.

Both contracts are short term and Bunting absolutely is not over paid. They would also be getting retention on Karlsson. They are quite literally a model franchise lol

Those two would make up all of Willys offense and then we can trade him for a top D. Maybe trade Brodie for Zadorov too for more snarl in the back.

Bargain bin diving isn't gonna really help for what Bertuzzi can provide. Sometimes you have to give term to secure a player. Can't always just tip toe around it.

Comtois is a sub-10 goal scorer and hoping he can output more than that seems really optimistic. I'm sure he could do better but as good as Bertuzzi? No way.

I thought the goaltending contracts actually helped our case with Samsonov.

I projected 2 years at 3.75M but it could easily get down to 3M, or maybe 3.5

They could even take him to arbitration if need be (and I think he's got a fairly weak case on his side), but I honestly don't think that'll be necessary. He seemed to really like playing in Toronto and I think a compromise on a very short-term deal could be made without too much hassle.

Issue with Shaw is that he's torn his ACL four times.

Take the cheapest of Shaw/Motte for the 12/13th forward depth slot and expect to rotate in some Marlies when they get injured.
