Our current org player chart, from Kyle Cushman. I believe SDA will play in the KHL this year.

hypothetically can we move Klingberg @50% ++ for Karlsson with retention, even though we just signed him ?

I would suggest a Brodie subtraction in a Karlsson deal would have made more financial sense. But I don't see a blueline with both Karlsson and Klingberg mostly doing the same stuff on RD, and it would be insane to trade Klingberg out now for Karlsson.

I don’t love Max Domi as an option, but he’s one of the only depth scoring/grit options left that’s realistic.

Maybe that’s been the problem? We bring in mercenaries every year and none of them are truly invested in this team.

Maybe it’d be good to bring in a guy like Bertuzzi for 5+ years who can become a significant complimentary player for us and show his personality a bit to take the spotlight away from the core 4.

I think that’s a part of what Treliving was talking about yesterday with Reaves bringing noise and the need for characters on the team. Guys like Tucker and Domi, for example, were beloved in Toronto and took the spotlight away from some of our star players. Part of becoming an actual team rather than 4-5 guys and a bunch of nameless grey faces.
If mercenaries want to come here at a discounted rate and elevate their profile around the league, I'm all for it. It just means they are going to give it their all while they're here to cash in once they leave. At least we have that going for us.

This is the reality of trying to build a competent team around a core that takes up half of the salary cap.

That won't change until a core player is traded or Tavares' contract is off the books.

That defence looks terrible as is, adding Karlsson would just make it worse

I'd love to give Comtois a shot. He's shown skill before and can play physical

You can't help but laugh at Dubios ability to judge goaltenders.

Here is a comparison of last year results of past decisions compared to his new batch for the Pens.

He is simply clueless at this. We should send him Murray to upgrade in net.

His signing of Ned is a head scratcher on par with the Mrazek signing. Didn't the Leafs recently torch him for 10 goals against in Detroit? Dubas may wish to call Warby Parker next.

Now you’re comparing Marner and Matthews situation as RFA’s to Samsonov ?
Nope just making a point that in that case RFA didn't seem to matter in the least. :wg:

However what about the rest of the post.

Ilya Sorokin ---------- age 27 ... RFA ... 62 games .. 31 wins .. GA/G : 2.34 .. SV%: .924 & 6 SO = 8 years @ $8.25 mil & [#3 OA in GSA/x +38]
vs.
Ilya Samsonov ------- age 26 ... RFA ... 41 games .. 27 wins .. GA.G: 2.33 .. SV%: .919 & 4 SO = __Fill in the Blank ____ ???? & [#10 OA in Goals Saved above expected +18]
vs.
Tristan Jarry --------- age 28 ... UFA ... 47 games .. 24 wins .. GA/G: 2.90 .. SV%: .909 & 2 SO = 5 years @ $5.375 mil & [#76 OA in Goals Saved above expected -2.8]

This is what I would imagine Samsonov's agent is using in contract talks with Leafs GM where 2 recent signings has Sorokin RFA as the ceiling and Jarry UFA the floor and Sammy #' to come in the middle.

There is a belief among Leaf Nation that Sammy is going to come in around $3 -$4 mil per, but these 2 contract yesterday seem to have changed the goalie landscape.

Hurricanes make it to conference final and this off season have already added Orlov and Bunting and seemingly are the front runners for Karlsson. Must be nice.

I am not trying to be rude but you are completely off your rocker and have no idea what you are talking about.

I can't wait till we're post-Tavares and no longer tap dancing around that contract.
If we could just somehow dump him off, we would be able to do a lot of things. Need to add draft picks (how i have no idea) over the next two seasons, and then go again.

The problem with having stars and scrubs, is stars are hard to trade and no one wants to trade for your scrubs. They will just wait until we walk them to UFA status.

I am so envious of their salary structure. As i am with about 25 other teams.

Must be nice? Bunting is massively overpaid. Orlov is overpaid but at least that one's short term. Them adding an overpaid Karlsson to not play defence would be hilarious.

Our center position is looking very suspect especially if you think Tavares is really starting to slow down.

Kampf is a good defensive C and I don't mind the re-signing but he shouldn't be put in any type of offensive role and we still don't know what Holmberg really is.

We'd be smart to inject some skill and speed at that position.

Dubas signed another goalie today already goaltender Magnus Hellberg.

Hellberg becomes the second goalie the Penguins have poached from the Detroit Red Wings, after having also signed goalie Alex Nedeljkovic yesterday. Starting last season with the Ottawa Senators, Hellberg was acquired by Seattle Kraken via waivers on November 22nd, and then subsequently claimed on waivers by the Red Wings the next day. Serving as the primary backup for Detroit last year after Nedeljkovic was sent down to the minors, Hellberg posted a 4-8-1 record, managing a .885 SV% and a 3.29 GAA.

That doesn't even include Casey DeSmith also currently under contract @ $1.8 mil.

With the injury history of Tristan Jarry his new high priced starter I guess you can't have too many goalies lying around. :wg:

I'd walk away from him even at $4m. There's a reason Washington let him go unqualified.

Woll provides better goaltending at a fraction of the cost

Dubas and bringing in plethora of mediocre-bad goalies. Name a more iconic duo

That’d be quite risky to just put all our eggs in the Woll basket at this moment.
