Notes from the Women's Portal: Ohio State starts its offseason reload

Fresh off winning the 2024 national title, the Buckeyes haven't wasted any time in recruiting from the transfer portal. Other teams have started to make a splash as well.

By Sydney Wolf
Today at 11:24 AM (Apr. 18, 2024)

While the men's transfer portal has been exploding in recent weeks with now over 300 current player entrants, the women's portal has been a bit quieter.

Almost all of the athletes that intend to transfer have already entered the portal on the women's side and the overall number of names on the list hovers around 120 on The Rink Live Portal Tracker. A few more players will definitely throw their names in the ring later, but a majority of players have entered, so now it's just simply a waiting game of seeing where these players end up. ...

Boston U also looks primed to make another Frozen Four appearance. Cole Eiserman is probably going to be the top drafted US born players at the 2024 draft. Lane Hutson's younger brother Cole is also going to be added to defence.

This place has been known to jump the gun well ahead of announcements, some so soon they don't turn out to be true, but they're credible enough for this to be something to watch in college hockey going forward

Am I missing something? Summit League only has four hockey schools, so if they made a hockey championship then they'd need at least two other schools joining as at least affiliates to have an auto-bid.

Not sure of the inventive for North Dakota, UNO, and Denver to do this unless the Summit's about to get a good broadcast deal and they need hockey to be part of that. They have a good thing going with the NCHC.

The Lightning board needs a clarification.

Eamon Powell plans to stay in school for his fifth year. CapFriendly is showing that Powell needs to be signed August 2024 in order to keep him.

Do teams get to keep the rights to players who opt for a fifth year?

I fairly certain that an NCAA player has to be signed within 3 years or they become a free agent, I think the timeframe for CHL is 2 years.
And I'm fairly certain that the Lightning board denizens have long since become distracted by other essential matters. But we're here to help them, on a rare occasion. :xsign:

NCAA rules panel approves tweaks to checking from behind, contact to head

The changes were proposed last month before being approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Thursday.

By Trent Singer

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved an adjustment to the rules for checking from behind and contact to the head Thursday, providing game officials additional options when adjudicating these penalties in men's and women's hockey for the 2024-25 season.

The new adjustment provides guidance and additional levels of penalty options when enforcing them.

It strengthens rules regarding clear violations of contact to the head to include a major penalty and at least a game misconduct or disqualification. ...

Clarkson Turns to Alum J.F. Houle as Next Coach
by Mike McMahon/Staff Writer ...

Laval Rocket head coach Jean-Francois Houle, a Clarkson alum, has been named the next head coach of the program. Houle replaces Casey Jones, who resigned last week to become the head coach-in-waiting at Cornell.

Houle had been mentioned as a candidate, but he felt like a longshot only because he just signed a three-year extension to continue as the head coach of Montreal's AHL affiliate. Given his success in developing players for Montreal, he's been mentioned as a possible successor to Martin St. Louis at some point or as a future NHL head coach somewhere else. ...

Houle has a son who is playing lacrosse at nearby SUNY-Potsdam, and he's been living in Plattsburgh, N.Y., which commuting to Laval, in order to be in between. So all of that may have factored into Houle's decision.

Houle was an assistant at Clarkson from 2003-10, when he left to become the head coach of the Lewiston MAINEiacs in the QMJHL. Houle then spent three seasons as the head coach of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (QMJHL) from 2011-14. He was named the head coach of the Laval Rocket in 2021. ...

Shyiak Returns to Northern Michigan as Head Coach
CHN Staff Report

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Dave Shyiak, a member of the 1991 Northern Michigan national championship team, is returning to his alma mater as head coach. ...

Shyiak comes back to NMU after serving as an assistant at St. Cloud State most recently, and at Western Michigan before that. Shyiak was head coach at Alaska-Anchorage from 2005-13.

Shyiak played four seasons with the Wildcats (1987-91), where he helped captain the 1991 National Championship team and was a member of both the 1989 and 1991 WCHA Playoff championship teams. Shyiak returned to Northern to begin his coaching career as an assistant (1995-2002) under Comley before being promoted to associate head coach for three seasons (2002-05).

Shyiak was in the mix the last time there was an opening, when Grant Potulny was hired in 2017. Potulny recently stepped down relatively late in the offseason, setting off an exodus of players and recruits that will at least temporarily set the program back ...

Laura Schuler finally getting her shot as head coach at UMD

Schuler has been named head coach of the Minnesota Duluth women's hockey program, the team her predecessor says 'she was made to be the head coach of' after a decade of service to UMD.

By Matt Wellens
July 10, 2024 at 1:32 PM
DULUTH — Nine years after being passed over for the job, Laura Schuler is head coach of the five-time national champion Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team.

The interim tag was removed from Schuler’s title on Wednesday when the school named her the third head coach in the 25-year history of UMD women’s hockey. She was given the interim head coach position on May 31 after Maura Crowell announced she was leaving the Bulldogs after nine years to become head coach of Dartmouth. ...

Schuler returned to Duluth in 2021 to work under Crowell, and over the last three seasons has helped the Bulldogs to a 74-36-8 record with three NCAA tournament appearances. The CCHA has granted full membership to Augustana a season early in response to the St. Thomas announcement that they are leaving for the NCHC after this season.

Commissioner Don Lucia's comments are certainly bitter...

"That’s why we wanted to add another team when Augustana was coming forward because they’re a school that’s all in,” Lucia said. “They already have their rink built. They’re already eligible for the NCAA tournament. St. Thomas does not have a rink built, and they are not eligible for the NCAA tournament for a few more years.

“They’re a much more ready-made program today than what we’re losing."

I'm not picking up the bitterness that you're attributing to Mr. Lucia. I'm seeing Mr. Singer cherry-picking Lucia's words from a previous context to support the narrative of his TRL opinion piece.
