Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

If this has legs, i wonder if Vladdy spooked himself with the pretty meh start.

He certainly hasn't been awful to start the year, but he also hasn't been 600+ million good or whatever demand he initially made.
It's only a week. But I think if he's not hitting homers at the end of April, he might come down to earth, to protect himself in case he has a season like 2023, because he hasn't exactly been consistent in his young career unlike some others he likes to compare himself to.

First day of full farm action.
Bisons lost a double header. Best individual performance was Jonaton Clase: 4/5 with a 2b and sb.
NH lost 3-1. Best performance and guy to watch: Ryan Jennings, 2 perfect innings, 4K’s. CJ Van Eyk was solid too.
VAN got a solid start from Grant Rogers, 4ip, 0er, 5k. Adrian Pinto with a HR. Bullpen blew it. Interesting lineup.
DUN atarter Khal Stephen spun the beauty of the night: 5 shutout innings, 3bb+h, 6k. Sleeper 2b Sam Shaw with the big stick: 2/4 with a HR and 3rbi. Bullpen blew this one too.

Gomez and Pujols both seemed to be decent sources amongst Dominican players so could be some smoke here. Pujols is the guy who did the interview with Vlad a couple weeks ago whereas Gomez is a more general Dominican baseball reporter guy.

No US insider (Heyman, Rosenthal, Passan) have said anything yet though outside of Heyman's initial thing where he said he believed the Jays and Vlad would "figure it out" somewhere around the 500 million range.

Edit: More from Rodriguez

I'd rather the Jays wait and see what Vladdy brings this year, but it's hard to blame them wanting to keep a homegrown star in a sport where Toronto isn't a premier destination for free agents. And with division rivals circling just waiting to pounce and sign him away the Jays have decided to potentially overpay to keep Vladdy in the fold for the rest of his career.

Hopefully he looks like a superstar for the majority of his contract like he did in 2021 and the latter half of last season. Consistency is key for him.

What an awful commitment to an overrated player who hasn’t won a thing

One monster season during covid playing in Buffalo. Can’t put much stock into that.

His body will crumble soon too. Terrible shape.

Exactly this.

Is it an overpayment? By pretty much every conceivable metric, yes. First baseman should be the position where you put the least money given the relatively little value it brings.

Do i care? Nope. My generation grew up watching star player after star player either be allowed to walk (Delgado, Encarnacion, Bautista to an extent) or ask out when they saw their chances of winning were better elsewhere (Halladay)

I do not give a shit about the contract, it's not my money. Just get it done and put an end to that trend.

People will whine about the term and dollars but it's bigger than that. If this team wants to be in the same tier as Boston/NYM/Philly sort of teams just below the Dodgers/Yankees, you simply have to make this signing. If they let Vladdy walk, they're basically announcing to the world (and the fanbase, and the masses of casuals who love Guerrero) that they're Cleveland or Cincinnati instead.

why are they paying him the bidding-war price before there is even a bidding war?

He had many things. Sasaki to the Dodgers first and recently the Marte extension and the Profar suspension. Has great sources with Latin American players. Id say it is as good as done. Blair also reported Vlad's agents were in Toronto all week (they could still be here in Toronto) and they met with ownership. It is moving towards a deal.

Heyman also reported this in the morning;

What caliber would that be.

- While there was a rash of extensions this past week, no extension is more widely anticipated than the $500 million contract that Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is expected to receive, perhaps this week.

Despite Guerrero’s spring-training deadline of the start of spring training, the Blue Jays and Guerrero’s representatives continue to negotiate, exchanging figures and are expected to reach a resolution any day.

The deal will keep Guerrero in Toronto for at least 14 years
, ending any ideas for the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets, who were atop of Guerrero’s wish list if he became a free agent.

Vladdy pathetic.
Hope to god we are not going to give him, what he somehow thinks he’s worth.
