This might be a way for a player to make his money, and for the team to get a much lower cap hit.

Take Phaneuf for example.

Phaneuf makes 6.5/6.5/5.5 these next three years. So 18.5 million over the next three years.

The leafs now amnesty buy out Phaneuf, Phaneuf is given a check for 18.5 million dollars, and is now a free agent.

Leafs re-sign Phaneuf for 7 years at 3 million per.

Leafs: Phaneuf only counts as 3 million per year against the cap for next 7 years

Phaneuf: Phaneuf makes 18.5 + (7x3) = 39.5 million in total over the next 7 years. The equivalent of 5.6 million per year.

Thoughts?

Phaneuf lets them buy him out. Then plays hardball. And gets ~6+ from another team.

Phaneuf gets even more money. Leafs wasted a lot of money and lost one of their best players.

Also, I believe there's a rule that if you buy someone out, they can't resign with you for at least a year or something, specifically to prevent this type of move.

You can't sign a player you just bought out.

Ok, I want to say it too incase you didnt get it.

TEAMS CAN'T RE-SIGN PLAYER THEY BOUGHT OUT FOR AT LEAST A YEAR

Just to go with your idea, lets say we do this, then another team signs him on our behalf, and them trades him back to us a year later for some nice added benefits.

Is that really worth it for us? Give up about a 1st round pick to save .5M -1 M cap hit over a couple years, not to mention any additional assets we might have to give up if the league cracks down on this move.

EVEN if there were no rule against it. I could easily see it going down where the player just signs a massive deal somewhere else.

What would the Leafs do? Complain about it? Oh hey! Commissioner! We were trying to circumvent the cap by making backroom deals that the league wouldn't approve of, and the other party didn't hold up their end of the bargain! .... The player could just pretend it was a legitimate buyout because it was a bad fit, and then go sign a huge contract, and there's nothing the Leafs could say about it.
