Welcome to the Garnet Chargers era!
Publication Date August 3, 2023

The question, first posed last fall at the onset of a larger branding update for the College, was straightforward:

Could Union College develop a nickname – and an accompanying mascot – that would better exemplify Union’s rich history and resonate with current and future students more effectively than the current moniker?

After nearly 10 months of exploration and discussions with stakeholders across the College community, that question has been answered in resounding fashion.

We are proud to introduce today the Union College Garnet Chargers!

Garnet Chargers rose to the top of a field of 400+ unique names offered by more than 1,100 Union students, alumni, faculty, and staff members. Garnet has been Union’s official color for more than 150 years. Chargers harkens to Schenectady’s legacy as a hub for electrical innovation and invention and is an apt metaphor for the high-energy, forward-looking Union College experience. ...

Having too many players no longer reviewable after goals on ensuing play

Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee also clarifies scope of video reviews

Having too many players on the ice when a goal is scored on the ensuing play was removed from the list of plays that can be reviewed by video in NCAA men's and women's ice hockey for the 2023-24 season.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved this proposal during a video conference call Thursday.

NCAA Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Rules Committee members made the recommendation due to significant confusion with several parts of the rule last season, namely the threshold of a "gained advantage."

Despite attempted education during the 2022-23 season, rules committee members think the rule is better managed by the on-ice officials and should not be part of the instant-replay criteria. In many cases, this rule led to longer reviews and more incorrect outcomes.

Aspects of video review
The NCAA Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Rules Committee have issued a clarification to the video replay criteria to make clear the scope of a review.

This is intended to reduce confusion regarding reviews and what is allowed to be reviewed when the process is initiated.

For example, when officials are reviewing a goal that is scored and a team challenges for an offside infraction, officials are to review the offside play but not the entire play.

College Hockey America Season Preview
Penn State the favorite as the CHA opens its 22nd season on Sept. 23

In the News ... 9.15.23 CHA WEEKLY RELEASE- SEASON PREVIEW

Penn State Tops Preseason CHA Coaches' Poll: The Penn State Nittany Lions top the College Hockey America preseason coaches’ poll released Sept. 15 by the CHA. The Nittany Lions garnered five of five possible first-place votes in balloting among CHA head coaches (coaches could not vote for their own teams) for 30 points, five more than 2022-23 CHA runner-up Mercyhurst, which tallied 25 points and received the remaining first-place vote. Robert Morris, which returns to competition for the first time in two season this year, finished third with 23 points, followed by Syracuse (15 points), Lindenwood (14) and RIT (13) to round out the poll.
Janecke Tabbed CHA Preseason Player of the Year: Penn State sophomore Tessa Janecke, the 2022-23 CHA Rookie of the Year, is the coaches’ choice for CHA Preseason Player of the Year. The Orangeville, Ill., native was a dynamic 200-foot player in her rookie season a year ago as she earned national Rookie of the Year honors to cap a breakout freshman campaign. She shared the national freshman lead in scoring with 47 points and finished second nationally among rookies with 22 goals. Lindenwood forward Morgan Neitzke also received a vote in the balloting.
Hengelmüller, Mahoney Share CHA Preseason Rookie of the Year Honors: Forward Henlee Mahoney of Mercyhurst and defenseman Karolina Hengelmüller of Penn State are the CHA Preseason Co-Rookies of the Year. Mahoney joins her sister, Kylee, on the Laker roster after two seasons of junior hockey with the Stoney Creek Sabres. The Niagara Falls, Ont., native also took home team MVP honors as the team captain at Saint Michael Catholic High School in 2021-22.
Hengelmüller was a member of the Austrian U18 program from 2019-22, earning a gold medal in 2022 as she led the tournament in defenseman scoring and a silver medal in 2020 as Austria competed in the IIHF U18 Division I Women’s World championships both seasons. Mercyhurst defenseman Sofia Nuutinen and Robert Morris forward Alaina Giampietro also received votes.
• Twenty-Five Former CHA Players on PWHL Draft Eligibility List: Twenty-five former College Hockey America student-athletes are among the 268 eligible players from around the world who have declared for the inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft, which will take place Sept. 18 in Toronto. The list of CHA alumni includes 20 players who completed their eligibility in the league and five who began their careers in the CHA before transferring to other programs. Two-time CHA Player of the Year and CHA Scoring Champion Brittany Howard of Robert Morris headlines the list 13 former league forwards who will wait to hear their names called on Monday afternoon. Other forwards include Lindenwood’s Bailey Coyne, RIT’s Kendall Cornine, Robert Morris’ Lexi Templeman, Syracuse’s Shiann Darkangelo and Mercyhurst’s Summer-Rae Dobson, Samantha Isbell, Jessica Jones, Mary Margaret Knott, Emma Nuutinen, Liliane Perreault, Alexa Vasko and Kayla Vespa. Former Syracuse blueliner Jessica DiGirolamo tops a list of seven CHA defensemen on the PWHL list. Others include RIT’s Taylor Baker, Robert Morris’ Emily Curlett, Megan Eady and Kristen Richards and Syracuse’s Shelby Calof and Allie Munroe. CHA career saves leader and U.S. Olympian Nicole Hensley of Lindenwood is one of five former CHA goaltenders in the draft pool, along with Mercyhurst’s Amanda Mäkelä, RIT’s Terra Lanteigne, Robert Morris’ Meeri Räisänen and Robert Morris and Syracuse netminder Arielle DeSmet. ...

Quick question: Did Maine ever get Artyom Duda, the Russian who played 14 games in the KHL? I don't see his name on their roster for 2023-24.

CCHA Preseason of the Year Austen Swankler has entered the transfer portal. Which also brings about an interesting aspect in the fact that he was the one who received a waiver to be able to join BG after playing with the Erie Otters.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the suspension of 3 players and the coach at BGSU?
From TSN Rick Westhead: Former Bowling Green hockey player Austen Swankler (a Hobey Baker Memorial Award nominee last season) has gone public, alleging he left the school because was a victim of hazing. Swankler: “I came out about everything that happened to stop future incidents from occurring. Hazing is a serious issue especially to this school. So before you saying I’m dragging the school through mud know the facts. I know the facts because I was a victim… If coming out about hazing is being a bad team then I guess I’m a bad teammate.”

As AUS Fan eluded to, it's in relation to the hazing incident.

But regardless the portal is here to stay in college athletics
I also don't like the portal, but it doesn't affect me the same as the NCAA fans.

My complaint is that players are transferring because of playing time or other stuff which makes them NOT Student-Athletes but minor pros. In the CIS you can't jump to another school without sitting out a year, generally speaking.
The NCAA loses it's Chit if a B-Ball player gets a pizza for an autograph but has no issue with guys bouncing from school to school.
