Bruins telecasts on NESN this season have averaged a 3.43 rating (about 83,000 households) which is down 19% from last season. Part of the drop can be attributed to NBC poaching games with popular opponents but the same was also true last season. These numbers are for Eastern and Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.

The Bruins are now back to viewership number they had in 2010.

The NHL team rankings are based on an analysis of ratings information for clubs that make their Nielsen data available. Information on Carolina and Nashville was not available. Ratings also were not available for the league’s seven Canadian teams.

Of the 21 clubs that were analyzed, seven have seen ratings increases from this point last year, 13 have had decreases, and one is flat.

The NHL has to be shocked by the TV numbers in Florida where the Panthers ratings are DOWN this year and they are now averaging 3,000 households a game.

In these cities NHL teams have higher local TV ratings than NBA teams: Boston, Chicago, Washington, Philadelphia, Detroit, Minneapolis - St. Paul, and Denver.

I'm sure that doesn't take into account online viewings, especially ones were not supposed to use.

I dropped cable last summer so I'm definitely contributing to that decline. NESN is absolutely the only thing I miss about cable, I hope they come out with a subscription-based service for Apple TV soon!

Disappointing season last year for Bruins fans...
And losing that Big Bad Bruins(Lucic) way of the team probably lost a lot of viewers IMO

Just subscription based service for any Internet service would get my money.

It's too bad the NHL can't cut out the blackout restrictions, otherwise I'd be a full subscriber to the Game Center or whatever it is that you can watch games, and I'd cut my cable completely.

The rest of NESN has little interest to me. And I accidentally watch Charlie Moore because I left the TV on, and my god that's obnoxious.

I would too

It's not just the Bruins. NHL hockey has no passion and talent can't shine through.

I have GameCenter and was able to watch B's games right up until the NHL switched over all their digital services to BAM. I'm right on the edge of the broadcast restriction line for NESN and I guess they've tightened up the controls since the switch. Disappointing.

i love the dynamic of brick and jack , but yeah the only reason i have cable is because of the b's and red sox.. this team is kind of boring to watch . i get it , im still going to watch every game but i gotta admit some games can be tough to get through , especially when it looks like the team is just going through the motions. boston is a tough market when you arent on top

I know I've been watching less this year; a combination of being the busiest I've ever been, a girlfriend, and the Bruins bringing lack luster efforts a fair amount - I just don't put the effort in like I used to

MLBAM does indeed run a tight ship and they managed to do what the NHL couldn't or wouldn't do as they shut down they biggest of the bootleg services that offered hockey steams.

NESN would love to offer an app and charge $10 a month in New England but their current contracts with cable and satellite providers prohibit that. NESN currently gets roughly $3.50 a month from every cable and dish subscriber in New England ( except far southwestern Connecticut) and they are not going to mess with that golden goose right now.

This new Bruins team is just so boring to watch. I have been a die hard Bruins fan for over forty years and on most nights I cannot bear to watch this team. I have never felt this way towards a Bruins team before. There have been the most unusual coaching/personnel decisions this year. I understand that they were left in a bad salary cap situation but if you are going to move a Lucic for cap reasons, couldn't you at least have found a trade partner that wouldn't have you eating salary if salary is our issue? We give players that do nothing like Kemppainen more than 35 games and K. Miller who is not an NHL D making costly mistake after costly mistake. All to never miss a shift when others like C. MIller, Randal, Vatrano, Koklachev etc. make one small mistake and they sit or get sent down. Not to mention the fact that we have M. Talbot, waived twice, does nothing to contribute and shouldn't be in the NHL yet is playing every night. It is just too painful to watch this group get pushed around all night while Bergeron has to drop the gloves because no one on this team with the exception of Beleskey or Rinaldo has any fight in them. There are too many passengers on this team in my opinion.

Breaking News: Water is wet, and Boston is a bandwagon Sports town.

Always has been, always will be, for large majority of fans.

My father in law is one of those guys. I've sadly seen it firsthand.

I agree that Boston is a bandwagon sports town, but it wasn't always like that.

In the 60s when the Bruins were the worst team in the league, there were 13,909 for every Bruins game. Money (as usual) killed the regular Joe Fan. Who wants to pay current prices for a team that's not either great or entertaining.

Lack of talent coving the Bruins and the fact NESN sucks may have a little to do with it.

Only thing NESN cares about in the Red Sox .pre pre pre pre game and the post post and after post game for the Sox.

Bruins fan base is far from bandwagon

I have watched less than 25% of games this year.

The schedule is garbage with all the Western Conference games add to that the lack of fighting/emotion and the NHL regular season is beyond boring.

NHL season was always too long but the side games (hits, fights, revenge, drama) made the regular season worth watching. Heck, even habs games have been rather boring.

Another way the schedule screws things is that you get 2 guaranteed games vs. the west but in some cases only 3 vs. the Ranger, Pitt, Philly, etc. Amazing how far it has declined since 2011.

I know everyone hated Felger but his feuds with Montreal were amazing. Those did not come from dump and chase or flashy goals, those were brought on by the violence on the ice that makes hockey so damn entertaining. Take that away and the regular season is meh.

Out Edwards

In Goucher

Jack is just stale. Same gibberish night in night out. His knowledge is godly, but he spouts too much shif and would be better suited to a talk panel or something.

I wonder if this factor is being raised by Jacobs to Neely as he and his GM prepare for the deadline. A post season appearance would also boost NESN ratings. No doubt sponsors are aware of the decline and are not happy. If it gets any lower we'll be seeing food choppers for $19.99 + P&H advertised between periods.
