#2 overall pick in 2022.

Good size(6’1”), skates well, moves the puck well. Can’t get a regular spot in New Jersey for some reason.

Devils fans, what’s going on?

What would he cost and which teams would be interested?

He has a point. I know devs fans believe hes still bound to be a stud but it is really odd that he couldnt beat out a near league minimum dman for bottom pair minutes and that the devs felt obligated to sign vets in his place to block him.

I dont think his value is anywhere near where devils fans believe it is. Value is probably in the Kakko ballpark which if borgen is flipped for a 2nd is roughly a 2nd, 3rd and 6th

"... How dare you talk like that about a guy that would be the best RHS D-Men on your team, considering the Devils are contenders and the Rangers a lottery-candidate"

I mean, one is a 6th year winger and the other a third year right handed defenseman with one more ELC year left, so totally comparable trade chips.

I think there's a better trade comp out there....probably the right handed defenseman taken a couple of picks later in the same draft who was just traded.

A late first as the main piece would be pretty bad no? Maybe trade for a roster player makes more sense

This interview has been blown out of proportion.

Interviewer asked Nemec if he would request a trade like Jiricek did and he answered the question.

The idea of this season was for Nemec to be the 3RD with Kovacevic as the extra. Nemec was banged up to start with an injury he sustained in Olympic qualifiers and had a rough start to the year. Kovacevic came out of nowhere to be borderline elite defensively and with Pesce and Hamilton on RD, there’s no room for Nemec at the NHL level.

Devils defense has also been surprisingly healthy since Luke and Pesce returned which means Nemec hasn’t had a chance to play at the NHL level. There’s a really solid chance injuries strike at some point and Nemec will be needed to step in and give the Devils good minutes.

Next year the Devils will either move Hamilton and resign Kovacevic or let Kovacevic walk and Nemec will slide in as 3RD next to Dillon.

EDIT: This post is getting a lot of traction so might be a good time to note this “quote” posted was spliced together from two different answers in the interview to make it sound even worse than it was. It’s pure clickbait from Spittin Chiclets.

He got beat out by 7 other defensemen in camp and during the regular season. Now, in fairness, he got hurt in international play and I do believe he may have been fighting through that unsuccessfully at the start of the year, but we'll see. He wasn't happy about getting sent down and his start there was super slow as well, though he's picked it up as of late.

Kovacevic has been a defensive monster for them and they none of the defensemen have missed any games since Hughes / Pesce came back, so there hasn't been a shot to bring him back up either.

Right now, I think the most likely scenario for next year is that Kovacevic walks in free agency and there's an open RHD spot for Nemec.
I think the second mostly likely scenario is that they re-sign Kovacevic and trade Dougie.

Third most likely scenario is that they trade Nemec.

I don't have a ton of interest in a late first personally, but if you're moving him, you're moving him. You just take the best deal out there imo. If you end up with a package like the Jackets got for Jiricek, it's not like you can't flip that mid-late first for a roster player either, so in that situation I think you just do what you can do.

I think the devils would go in another direction and he would be a piece in a bigger or trade. Or maybe it's a prospect swap like McGroarty / Yager.

Team control is a great thing, but what if the player sucks?

I'm not overly concerned about that. He was good in the NHL last year. He's cranked it up with 15 points in his last 16 games in the AHL. I don't see any reason to believe that the slow start was something other than an aberration or injury related, but time will tell.

Kovacevic has been a great shutdown defenseman this season and with Hamilton and Pesce on the team Nemec was the odd man out. Also Kovacevic was not brought in to block Nemec he was brought in to be the 7th defenseman this season but with injuries to Luke and Pesce prior to the season he was able to get significant playing time and outplayed Nemec to start the season.

Nemec is 20, Kakko was 23, Nemec still has significant value. He's was drafted higher and has performed better so far than Jiricek who just went for a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks.

That's not the way you answer that question. It's a really crappy, selfish response that puts the GM and coaching staff on the spot. This, after reports of him pouting after being sent down. You don't see this from Casey.

He has nobody to blame but himself for being in the AHL. He was hot ****ing garbage on the devils this year.

This is an absolutely unacceptable level of entitlement. I think the Devils should actively be shopping him, don't need this sort of attitude in the organization.

Huge mistake taking him over Cooley.

Imagine waiving Kovacevic and letting Dillon walk and keeping Logan Stanley as a mainstay in your lineup instead.
