Can he ask for 6 after one season? We could probably got him for long term for cheaper than that before this season as he wasn’t that well thought of. NYC seemed to be glad to be rid of him.
A player can ask for whatever he thinks he is worth. But he will be in line for a big raise. He has 1 year left after this with a $3 M cap hit. After that he is a RFA with arb rights. He is currently on pace for a 52 point season and lets say he maintains that and maybe even adds to that total next season. Arbitrators love counting stats and if you have had back to back 50-60 point seasons he is likely getting $6 M on a 1 year award. IMO the best thing Chevy can do is on July 1st sign him long term long term in that $6 M range and hope he likes his situation enough he commits to the Jets.

Next to Ehlers, Pionk has become my favourite Jet, he is cool and calm, knows exactly what to do with the puck and his lack of defensive play was vastly overstated when we traded for him.

I wonder if Josh is battling an injury?
I wonder, too. If not a current injury, I wonder if he's a bit gun-shy since breaking his collar bone last year. He's playing so tentatively. When was the last time we saw Morrissey body check anyone? It used to be an unpredictable, but regular part of his game to step up and nail a forward that was in trolley tracks down his side. Now he simply backs into his zone and tries to shadow opposing forwards hoping to poke the puck away. If he's not closing gaps aggressively, he's much less effective. To be honest, he's looking a lot like Sami Niku on the ice right now, and not in a good way.

Yes he may play himself right out of town, but that's hockey. I hope we aren't looking at having to move him next year TDL, but his value is skyrocketing at least.

Even talented top pairing D men seem to have their ups and downs I guess. I lurked for a bit on the Morgan Rielly thread on the Leafs board and although the timing was pretty bad (right after McDavid humiliated him) the seemingly rational fans were saying he has not been good since last January. One thing both Rielly and Morrissey have in common this year is they are carrying sub-optimal partners who are being asked to play above their punching weight. I think Rielly and Morrissey aren't quite at the level where they can carry anyone like say a Buff type when he is on his game.

Morrissey is hurting, it's pretty obvious. He hasn't forgotten how to play. I also think there has been a lot of hyperbole about his play, especially in comparison to Poolman's.

Hurting, being asked to play a different game and being paired with a sub optimal top pairing partner. Yeah, he's not going to look like we're used to seeing.

Pionk was great again, what a steal this guy was. I hope when Buff gets back they pair JoMo and Neal together.

I would like to see a Pionk , Buff pairing . Buff could really roam with Pionk as his partner and man that could create offense for our forwards . :eek2:

They play the same side... That's why Pionk + JoMo is pairing that's most commonly proposed. Buff + Niku would be interesting.

Pionk is a good enough player he could probably play his off side .

It may be an injury, but I wonder to what extent he is feeling the added sense of responsibility and if it's a bit of a confidence problem. I also wonder if Pionk's success and assignment to PP1 is playing on him at all. We're all human and it may be that he had other expectations going into the season. I am positive that he adjusts his game back to where it was.

I don't think Morrissey is doing that poorly. Replace Pionk with Morrissey on the number one line and you'll see their point totals reversed as well. I see Morrissey often trying to overcompensate for Poolman (who can look like a world beater one shift and a ECHLer the next). Overall, there really aren't any issues with Morrissey or Pionk. The rest of the D-men are still very inconsistent.

I think Morrissey might still be hurting, or tentative because of his previous injury.

You mention Pionk... he is elevating a sub-par partner. Last night I thought Poolman was propping up Morrissey, if anything.

I think Morrissey will rebound, but his play is not where I expected this year, regardless of partner.

I'd pair Buff with Morrissey and look forward to a Samberg-Pionk pairing...

Poolman would be a very good option on a third pairing with Kulikov or Niku.

I still think Morrissey is elevating Poolman, he's playing far more conservative as a result. Poolman is a bit of a positional mess at times and his handling of the puck can be an adventure at times. Pionk has taken much more license to jump into the play or lead the rush on occasion, not sure what's holding Morrissey back in that regard.

All in all, I agree Morrissey's play has been below his standard so far, there are likely a variety of reasons for that.

Anyway, this being a Pionk thread, go Neal!

Rielly has an undisclosed injury.
Leafs' Rielly admits he's been playing through undisclosed injury
I'd put money on Morrissey having some kind of injury issue. His play is much more tentative this year, and he also has to play more carefully with Poolman as opposed to Trouba.
Pionk has been great, no complaints from me (but can he please do something about that name?...)
