Who's going to have a better career? Drouin seems to be a late bloomer and is really comming on strong, He seems to be a better playmaker/overall guy but MacKinnon seems to be a bit better of a scorer IMO

Drouin has 4 less goals and 2 more assist in 6 less games then MacKinnon

What makes you say Drouin is a late bloomer? He was drafted 2nd overall in the Q draft, only next to Mackinnon. He's always been considered a talented kid.

by the numberous draft websites moving him up 5-10 spots from their last rankings, means they thought he was good but maybe not elite and now those who have moved him have no doubt he can be elite

Drouin while not a late bloomer has seen his stock rise for a few reasons:

1. Neglecting to play junior hockey for 1/2 of a season after being the 2nd overall pick left him an afterthought by most.

2. Growth spurt from 5'7/8ish to 5'10/11ish

3. People once assumed his production relied on MacKinnon.

Those who watched Drouin in his rookie season, especially in the playoffs, knew that Drouin was also a top 5 talent, he just hadn't shown the nation yet.

Having said all that, I'd still take MacKinnon. Drouin may have higher IQ and better hands but MacKinnon has him in all other categories while still boasting excellent IQ and hands.

Last year MacKinnon dominated and Drouin was still getting his feet wet on the 2nd line. You could easily see that Drouin had great vision and was very talented, he just needed more confidence to break out. Every game this year I have watched, I have left with the impression that Drouin was the better player. But having said that, I would still take MacKinnon over Drouin if given the choice. I like MacKinnon's body frame and see him becoming a Eric Staal/Ryan Getzlaf type of player, I see Drouin becoming a Calude Giroux type of player, and while that is very much a positive, I just need to see how Drouin does against men before I were to take Giroux over Mackinnon. MacKinnon has a body more suited for the NHL already. Either way, I dont think you can go wrong. They will both have great NHL careers.

I would argue that Drouin has the better hockey IQ, but its very close. Drouin has the better vision IMO. MacKinnon also has more drive I believe. Other than that, you nailed it.

Can't think of a single scout/scouting Website/coach who ever gave the hockey IQ nod to MacKinnon in this debate. drouis has clear advantages in IQ/hands/creativity/makes linemates better.

It's actually a lot closer than people think. Drouin's IQ is now constantly being overrated while MacKinnon's is constantly being underrated.

Drouin makes some flashier passes for sure but MacKinnon has hockey IQ in other areas that make up for it.

I'd give Drouin a slight edge in IQ but MacKinnon could prove me wrong.

MacKinnon's game translates better to the NHL. He has much more strength and has a great shot and good speed to go with it. Drouin's IQ and vision is slightly superior but not by much. The only other thing I can think of that Drouin is better than MacKinnon is is his hands.

Personally I find that Drouin is being exteremly overrated on HF and MacKinnon is extremely underrated.

It's very rare when a guy who has a good chance of going first overall is underrated, but Mackinnon definitely is. People are enamored with Drouin's hands, they ignore everything Mackinnon does better, and the fact that his hands are still elite.

Thanks other guy from Halifax who's seen them more than once :sarcasm:

I'm in the MacKinnon camp here. I love Drouin, but it's not like his hands and vision are that much better than MacKinnon's. In fact, I do not thing the difference is wide at all.

I do think Drouin has better hands in tight, but MacKinnon does have the ability to puckhandle at top speeds a la Kovalchuk. Likewise, Drouin is a very gifted playmaker, but MacKinnon's vision is nothing to sneeze at: he can make creative plays himself, and his overall IQ is every bit as good as Drouin's when you consider the entire ice.

Drouin is slick as hell though.

Hoping the Kings continue to fail this year and Columbus gets a shot to get MacKinnon and Drouin

If the season were to end this way and the lottery wouldnt affect the order, Columbus would have the 2nd, 6th and 10th picks in the draft.:amazed:

any 3 of Jones, Mohanan, Drouin, Lindholm, MacKinnon, Barkov,Zadorov, Erne and Domi would be great to see, i would prefer Barkov (assuming Mackinnon went 1st) Manahan and Erne because you could probably play those 3 on the same line and have a 1st or 2nd line with fantastic upside, and they have their own 2nd pick which would be a top 6 pick in the second round
LW Barkov
C Manahan
RW Erne

This is so incorrect IMO. Drouin's game will translate just fine to the NHL. Through the first half of this year I've seen MacKinnon being taken out of games much more then Drouin. Johnny always finds a way to impact the game positively.

As for trying to rate attributes. Both have great vision, but Drouins is on a wholeeeee other level. Very different players, both are great. No way of knowing who has a better career, they're 17 lol.

It really depends on team need. For instance I have almost no interest in Drouin as a Wings fan even though I think he is an elite talent. But I think that about a lot of the top ten in this draft class. Now maybe he could switch to center but I have doubts.

MacKinnon is better than Drouin for me. But even while I think Drouin is the 4th most talented kid in the draft just in my opinion I would list him sixth on guys I would like the Wings to pick.

Jones
MacKinnon
Lindholm
Barkov
Monohan
Drouin

On the MacKinnon and Drouin IQ thing, MacKinnon's hockey IQ shows up a little more away from the puck for me and closes that gap considerably in my mind.

Well the point of this thread is who will have the better career. I cant tell the future but I think that MacKinnon will have an easier time in the NHL than Drouin.

He never said it wouldn't? How is that "so" incorrect?

If it were to end today:

WAS: Nathan Mackinnon
CLB: Alexander Barkov<-------------
CAL: Seth Jones
PHO: Jonathan Drouin
FLO: Sean Monahan
CLB: Elias Lindholm<------------
PHI: Rasmus Ristolainen
DET: Valeri Nichushkin
CAR: Hunter Shinkaruk/Ryan Pulock
CLB: ??

One of Shinkaruk, Pulock or Zadorov I think would be perfect.

CLB would probably take Zadorov at 10 and pair him up with Murray for the next 10-15 years
