So we lost Askarov for basically nothing. Unreal. Trotz should be fired.
Yeah that was my first thought. Wedgewood wasn’t the sole reason we traded Askarov but if we’d just cleared the space for him to be the backup this year he’d still probably be here. The best part is that Askarov has been way better than Wedgewood was for us too.So we lost Askarov for basically nothing. Unreal. Trotz should be fired.

Pretty much everyone does. We clearly have no one in the org who can evaluate young talent and their NHL readiness. It’s funny because this move itself is actually good in a vacuum but what it demonstrates about the broader roster building is terrible.Trotz needs to be canned for this.
Oddly enough I got to thinking about it, and I'm not sure they can.I am rather shocked at how quickly this organization has unraveled. Isn't ownership going to do anything?
Oh I'm sure anyone that was there when I was a STHer back in the early 2000's are mostly gone. There are probably a few, but I know I haven't been to a game since the SCF run, I simply can't justify the cost anymore. This is anecdotal and actually just curious what others think.
I’ve noticed the lack of familiar faces around the arena this season. Faces I’ve seen with regularity for quite a long time, definitely from well before the cup run. Was having a conversation with another sth who basically said ‘the cup run luster/goodwill is gone and this is what’s left behind’ which basically got us into this discussion about how it’s just boring in the arena now.
I can only surmise that what this means is that the higher ticket prices have run off the old school/pre-scf ‘fun’ crowd and left us with whatever we have left combined with a terrible on ice product. It’s a bad combo and I almost dread getting into the car and driving from the boro to the arena for games. I definitely don’t enjoy it like I used to. And I fully recognize this could simply be a me problem. 20+ years of supporting anything can eventually get a little stale.
Anyone else in the same boat noticing similar things or have a completely different takes on it?
Trading a bad goalie for a younger bad goalie. Does save some money. I would say it's a good deal because of the 'potential', but I don't trust the org even an inch with young players in the system.Annunen can't be worse than Wedgewood. In reality, probably both of them plus Chrona and Murray in Milwaukee are decent #3 guys. Which might be all we need if Saros is going to start 72 games.
It does save a little money. But that's a drop in the bucket to the $100M or whatever Trotz has spent.
At least it's a younger player coming in, I will take that as a "good sign" overall. 32-year old backup goalie goes away, 24-year old comes in? More of those exchanges please, anywhere in the lineup.
Me either, and based on some of what I've seen from Colorado fans he seems to have his own issues that can't really be fixed ( lateral movement seems to be poor ).Trading a bad goalie for a younger bad goalie. That's pretty much the state of the league (and any major sport) these days. I understand there are real and major downsides for most of us fans given the cost and loss of atmosphere, but if the team wants to keep up they need this type of reliable corporate support. I actually consider it a minor miracle that the franchise has locked down this type of long term monetary support given where it all started.Oh I'm sure anyone that was there when I was a STHer back in the early 2000's are mostly gone. You can tell by watching on TV it's not the same crowd. The days up until 2017 had a very college atmosphere to it. It was loud, even when it shouldn't be, and you could hear it on TV. Now? You don't even know the fans are there unless they score a goal, half of the bottom section always looks empty, etc.
Also a lot of us old timers drove in to watch the games, I came from Shelbyville myself. With the increase in everything from ticket prices, to food, to parking, I just can't spend nearly 200 bucks every time I go up, and that's probably on the lower side of the true cost.
Lateral movement can be a tough one to fix if there are underlying physiological issues/limitations. But a big slow goalie can sometimes mask those issues if he really masters his fundamental positioning. I don't think Rittich moves very well. But he has been doing ok in the league. If Annunen just doesn't have the joints/flexibility/reflexes for that kind of movement, maybe if he's young and coachable we can look to Korn on this one.Me either, and based on some of what I've seen from Colorado fans he seems to have his own issues that can't really be fixed ( lateral movement seems to be poor ).
That said, you pick up a 6th, save some cash, and replace a warm body with another warm body.
I don't think Askarov would have been happy even if we had made him the backup out of camp. We lost Askarov when we decided to go for it these next 3 years instead of committing to a rebuildSo we lost Askarov for basically nothing. Unreal. Trotz should be fired.
It's tricky how you handle a guy asking out. Askarov didn't actually have any leverage. Look at Jiricek right now. He wants out, and there are probably some decent-ish offers floating around for him, but Columbus isn't trading him despite that.I don't think Askarov would have been happy even if we had made him the backup out of camp. If he doesn't report to camp, and it sounded like he wouldn't, I think there's more of a sense of urgency to move him and avoid the distraction. I don't know if it's arrogance or what on our part that makes us say, hey, our #1 prospect guy doesn't want to be here? Yeah, off you go, we don't need that crappy attitude around here!
That's certainly a good part of what I felt about the trade anyway. But maybe a good GM can put that emotional reaction aside and try to do what is actually best for the franchise. In Askarov's case, Edstrom and a 1st is a non-terrible return, at least. But we're still reading the situation wrong if we say things like "we HAD TO trade Askarov because of the Saros contract" or "we HAD TO trade Askarov because we decided we're going for it these next 3 years" etc. We didn't HAVE TO trade Askarov, period.
But ultimately, I believe that is what broke the camel's back for him. We signed Wedgewood to a two year deal and used up that cap space.I don't think Askarov would have been happy even if we had made him the backup out of camp. He had already said he would report, right? He was in the midst of already backing down when the trade came through. And anyway, I'm not sure how much of a "distraction" a guy who isn't there really is to the team anyway, right? Like, our reporters would be asking Josi or Forsberg every day how they felt about the Askarov situation? Hardly. Our reporters wouldn't have even been asking Trotz! If he doesn't report to camp, and it sounded like he wouldn't, I think there's more of a sense of urgency to move him and avoid the distraction.
