An expiring contract, hasnt been that good this season, 2nd in 2026.

We already have alot of 2025 picks so i like getting the 2026 pick personally.

I dont see anyone else we are going to use a retention spot on this season. Maybe RyJos contract will be dissolved and leave us with another one just in case but i dont think we need it.

I think it's a solid return.

We PAID to get a pick that might become a roster player in 2030-31.

A 2nd next year with no retention, ok. A pick this year if retaining ... extending the failure period is never a good idea. This is a team that even when picking defensemen when at their peak of selecting ... took Klein before Weber.

If Josi's injury is in fact another concussion, his return next season or not is then a question. Even if he is back, how long he can stay healthy is a question for the rest of his contract based on his history. Skjei, Lauzon, Schenn, Barron, MDG, maybe rookies Molendyk and/or Gibson needing to jump right in and excel .... high risk blueline.

We lack a playmaker to go with Marchessault, Stamkos, Forsberg, and players to be named later. The odds of RoR catching lightning in a bottle yet again are slim. A 2026 second rounder addresses 2030 and beyond (if ever), nothing in the next five years.

We have tons of cap room and his contract is up at the end of the year. What difference is it that there’s retention? Are you paying for it? Who cares about the money if it doesn’t affect the cap?

You're nitpicking about current roster construction concerns for a deadline sales deal. That's why you're getting laughed at. The whole point of selling at the deadline is minmaxing futures, because that's what becomes available from playoff teams at the deadline (we've been one of those teams enough times that this is a phenomenon we should be familiar with).

Trading Gus and any of the other vets will, aside from their removal, under no circumstances have anything to do with substantial changes to the roster today, the rest of this season, or the rest of next season. They never will. Setting one's expectations that way goes beyond a mere fools' errand into Comically Completely Missing The Point. This is how a rebuild starts - you look for guys on your roster that are of interest as playoff rentals and that you don't need for (re)growing your own system, and you get as much as you can from desperate playoff hopefuls while you can. And we did not need Gus; he was a Nice To Have.

Even if you're totally buying the With The Right Coach We'll Totally Be Competitive Next Year story (and for the record I don't think anyone else here is), Gus is still merely an expendable Nice To Have in that scenario. No matter what your perspective it's just absurd to complain about it.

And the retention is beyond completely meaningless to us as we're not going to be using that cap at all while it's around. Cap space is a nice asset, but it has to be used to be valuable.

2nds this year are depressed in value due to extreme concerns about the strength of this draft. Under the circumstances 2026 is arguably preferable.

And the "last retention slot"? 1) Who else were you expecting to retain on this year and 2) Y'know, if Joey's contract goes away as expected, that also frees up a retention slot.

It's a deadline sale of a 35-year-old depth rental. Don't be absurd.

It'd definitely be nice if they would say something about the Joey contract. :skeptic:

Not that I have any expectation of Trotz moving any of our remaining guys who all have term left, though. But retention really seems to help increase trade value pretty dramatically, so if we're not getting the Joey slot opened up, then that's something we really needed to have the answer on before the TDL.
