If you’re burning it down, why are we holding on to Saros?
I agree with this. I hate moving Saros for a lesser return, but damn it's not really a rebuild as long as he is on the team. If we continue to draft in the 12-18 range we are going to be 3-4 years out for each of those drafted players if they even hit.

At this point, you may as well try throwing Novak, Glass, and Evangelista on a line together for 2nd line. You can run Sherwood, Jankowski, and McCarron as your 4th?

I really don't understand this. He wasn't that overpaid and the Preds certainly don't need immediate cap space. Trotz must really not like his attitude/character or something.

WOW.

Not a single team willing to take him for three years at half price???
Apparently that would suck up our last retention slot because Ekholm and Johansen have the other 2. I assume Trotz has further plans to retain to facilitate trades or at least have that option.

Owners are certainly forking out some cash the next few years.

And I agree with others. This is certainly not a roster that can compete, if you're burning it down, do it. Don't let Saros drag you to the 14th pick or whatever.

If we retained on Saros for his maximum the next 2 years how much could we get back? That sounds like a completely asinine question, but it's honestly worth exploring at this stage. He'd be a basically free top 5 goalie to a contender.

Maybe we won't be
Exactly. Maybe he'll chase some bigger fish. Maybe he'll try to sign Bertuzzi now, or maybe he actually will deal for DeBrincat, or pick up a Cap Dump from Vancouver.

With $18M in Cap space, he can do pretty much ALL of these things if he wants.

I don't think we should close the book on competing until we see the whole picture play out this weekend.

I'm dying of laughter right now. Source is never wrong. Barry wasn't going to go in with Duchene and Johansen next year. I don't think either were Trotz guys.

Super interesting and not surprised. I hadn't heard good things about Duch off ice.

Folks don't pay worthwhile prices for goaltenders like him. I really think it'd be counterproductive.

Source say anything about Saros?
The phones are working is all that I've heard. I do agree it makes no sense to keep him now though. However, I don't think it is a move made now. I think the Preds keep Saros then deal him at the deadline while getting Askarov more playing time in the AHL to see if he can handle it/is ready for prime time.

That last part is all speculation on my part but it makes sense to me.

Return would be less than we want, but how much is our rebuild status changing as long as he is in net? That might be the real return, as much as that sucks to say.

I think that ship is partially sailed with the kids we already have. You really don't want a losing culture to set in.

f*** that buyout is ugly. $6 mil three years from now?
I mean, the Cap is going up A LOT next season, but even still.

For this year, a savings of $5.44M is somewhat significant. But that drops to just $2.44M saved in 2024-25, and then just $1.44M saved in 2025-26.

It just says to me, Trotz wanted him off the team, no matter what. Even if the Cap savings with the buyout aren't that great.

Was Duchene part of the country club?

Seems like he's a good fit with Brunette.

I will say though, we seemed like a better team before he got here.
duchene was def part of the country club

the only members left are forsberg and josi

Listen I belong to a CC in real life- big CC guy. However, I don’t want men of great leisure in the locker room or on the ice

My good friends wife has babysat for The Duchenes from time to time. The guy has truly assimilated with the Nashville upper echeclon (membership at Troubadour) which is great in one regard, but exudes a certain complacency on the other hand.

I'm a little sad. I liked Duchene, even if he didn't always produce to his contract. That said, he was not going to get any better at his age so although this makes the Preds a worse team today, it seems pretty clear Trotz is looking to the future.

I believe that even going "full rebuild" as it appears to be trending, Trotz has enough of a head start with prospects and young players that I don't fear the 8-10 year abyss as much as some here.
