Nash, Bergeron and Bouchard ...

I was listening to an interview in french with Blair XXXX (didn't hear his last name) who is the main scout for team Canada U20's team and he said they were talking with a lot of NHL teams in order to get their under 20 canadian players but he seemed really negative about Horton, Staal. And he said that Bergeron, Nash and Bouchard would not be there. And that they were currently talking with Minnesota and Pittsburgh for Burns and Fleury.

I think its going to be more and more common that teams will not release their nhl player to play. Staal is much too important to his team.

Horton I think should probably go... but i doubt he will be released

this is where i'll chime in with calling some gms greedy.. i understand keeping nash, as he's vital to that club and maclean really wants a playoff push..
i also understand bergeron, who's been phenominal on boston, a playoff bound team...

but guys like horton, staal, fleury, burns (not playing much) should be let go.. easily, their teams aren't exactly challenging, (burns b/c he isn't playing much)

just let the kids go, the pens aren't likely to make a 15 game run at the time of the world juniors, same with carolina and florida...

But you have to think of the owners as well. They are in it to make money, and they do that by selling tickets. What do they care if Canada or the USA or Russia gains by loaning a star player of theirs?

And the fans are suddenly going to stop going to the game because Staal or Horton aren't there? I don't think so.

Personally, I think they're nuts for holding these guys back. Send 'em to the World Juniors, let them experience a championship type atmosphere, it's only going to serve them well when high pressure games come along in the playoffs.

For guys like Nash, yes it's understandable why you wouldn't release them. But for most, they're not key players in their lineups.

Burns has been a healthy scratch twice (I think) this season. He was out with a shoulder injury for several games. That said, I think he should go. He's already on pace to play more games than Bouchard did last year, but I think it would still be nice to let him go. It was good for Bouchard last year, but he was only in a little more than half the games. This year, Bouchard's looking to be a more important member of the team, so I'm not surprised he won't be going. 'Course, Burns is one of the few bright spots for the Wild this season, so I could see the team wanting to keep him.

I don't know what you're talking about Staal not playing much, but he is getting a ton of ice time. Saw him play in Buffalo on Fri nite and he played a lot, and looked good in a 5-0 loss to the Sabres.

I think that as long as a player is getting a good amount of ice time, they will learn more from 7 NHL games than from 7 world junior games.

"Oh, I don't want to win a Cup, so let's deal Forsberg and Sakic and Hejduk, because the other teams deserve to win once in a while, too."

What you're suggesting is stupid. NO owner or GM can afford to be lax with his time, because you're paying them to win every game, and they must put out the best team to do so on a nightly basis. Just because a team like Florida or Carolina isn't thinking about winning a Cup changes absolutely nothing. They are paid to win every night, and the least we can expect of them is to ice the best team possible, which means guys like Horton and Staal will play either way.
