If I recall there was a player agent probably 30? years ago representing several Leaf players from Russia. Apparently he was hard to deal with and the GM at the time traded all? the Leaf players he represented. Does anyone remember his name and which Leafs he represented? He might have been Russian himself.

Probably Mark Gandler, who was a notorious renegotiator with Alexei Yashin in Ottawa... but I don't remember all the Russian Leafs being traded all at once or if they were all Gandler players to begin with.

Seems like we had a gradual trading away of Russian players like Alexander Karpovtsev, Dimitri Yushkevich, Danny Markov, Igor Korolev for different reasons. Karpovtsev was a hockey trade. Markov had some issues off ice and Korolev was probably just hockey related. Seemed like a good teammate. Yushkevich had his blood clot issue as was all health related. Ukrainian Dimitri Khristich was just a bust on the ice. Some of them were Mike Smith guys.

Think it was Gander or something similar to that

Loved Yush and Danny Markov

Yuskevich was definitely Gandler and the contract demands led to the Svehla for Yuskevich roster swap. Quinn wasnt happy with the negotiations at the time

Mike Smith certainly liked his Russians and made an effort to pick them up and probably also to see them get into the lineup. That's why it looked like we had a pretty good Russian contingent for a while. After he was gone, I don't know that there was actually an effort to get rid of russians, but there certainly wasn't the focus on obtaining and keeping them that there used to be.

Loved Quinn... No nonsense leader. I don't like these negotiations, so I'll just trade you. Could definitely use that kind of leader right now. He also never held back on refs either.

What pops into my head is Danny Markov mock saluting like Jagr was doing at the time after the Leafs won the series against the Penguins circa 1999 or something like that. Markov may not have been the most upstanding individual but he was quite the rugged match up defender at a young age. I think he was traded out of town because he was hanging with some dangerous dudes in the city.

Meanwhile our best player hangs out with Justin f***ing Bieber like a preteen.

Markov is WAY cooler.

I loved Yushy though, speaking of him. One of my favourites I’ve had the pleasure of watching for the Leafs. Best shot blocker I’ve ever seen, not close. That guy was told you can’t play, it may kill you (blood clot) and begged to be put in anyways(they didn’t let him).

Wasn’t it Mogilny with the supposed Russian mob problems?
