My quest for one last game...

I moved to Raleigh in August of 2000.
I haven't missed an Isles at the Hurricanes game since I've moved down here.
(I even worked for the Canes!)

My last Isles home game was on the night before Thanksgiving 2002, against the Wild. I was back on the Island for my 10 year high school reunion (Bethpage and BTrots19 [he's a poster on here] is my buddy from the same graduating class)

All was set to go to the Chicago game on Dec 13th.

Then I get fired.

My dream was fading...

I was posting on facebook about how I want one more game, just one more game at the old barn.

I posted this on Facebook on Tuesday:
I mention to the wife, "I still want to get back to LI for an Isles game. There's one on March 14th. So, can we talk about this?"
"With what money? Did you win the lottery?"
"Okay, so, I guess we talked about it."

Today, in my e-mail, a RANGER friend of mine sent me some mail with the subject line:
"I think you should see them one more time"

I HAVE TWO TICKETS FOR THE MARCH 14TH GAME AGAINST THE HABS!

My brother lives in Baltimore - so - if I can stay at his place on the way up and the way down (if I want to break up the 9 hour or so drive and need to stay!)

SO...
HAPPY

Yes, I know this isn't entirely thread-worthy, but I'm just so damn happy right now!

Good for you...enjoy the experience!!!

Awesome!! I'm away back at school, so every home game I was at, "I kept thinking this could be the last time at the Coli." I'm hoping to come back on April 4th for the game against Buffalo for one last hoorah.

That Ranger fan is a good man (damn, that sounds awkward). Have fun!

I didn't think I would make it back there either, living in CT with 2 kids and being a tax advisor, but I was able to squeeze a game in December and a fellow Islander fan friend of mine who couldn't make it is footing the bill for the Florida game. Now my 7 year old sun expressed interest in going after my telling him the story about the Coliseum. My wife can't possibly object to that. Looks like 0 games turned into 3. Let's Go islanders!!!

He bought me two tickets.
The daughter doesn't want to go.
Do I bring the wife or my 12 year old son - who is an Isle fan because his old man is - to what would be his only game at the Coli, or do I bring the wife?

You bring your son. And its not even close.

I'm sure you and your wife have many wonderful memories together. Taking this road trip with your son - who is a fan because of you - to one of the last games ever at the Coliseum, is something he will remember forever. Unless your wife is an absolute diehard (and from what you say, she doesn't sound like one), you definitely take your son. The bond I have with my boys with the Islanders is a very special one. You also won't have to deal with child care issues either as your wife and daughter will be home.

A road trip with his old man to go see his first Islander game at the Coliseum will be one of his most cherished memories. And when they lift the Cup at the Ol' Barn in June, he can say that he was there!!!

And just one man's opinion.....Stuff like this is totally thread-worthy. I'm happy for you.

Unless your wife is a die-hard like yourself, you absolutely take your son. There is nothing like father/son bonding at your old stomping grounds. I can't wait to take my 7 year old for that reason. We will probably go to the Vancouver game.

I'm gonna take my son. I told him this morning.

But, ya know, the wife is my best friend, so, why wouldn't I want to go with my best friend.

Also, my dad used to take me to Isles games back in the early 80's, now it is my turn.

That's awesome - good for you. I haven't been to an Isles game at NVMC in over 15 years and have been thinking about taking my 2 young sons up - they've adopted the Isles down here in Philly and now have JT jerseys. If I can find a weekend where they don't have sports conflicting (that's not going to be easy), I'd love to get tix in the seats where I sat with my dad (who passed away before my boys were born) for all 3 home Cup wins. I'd be easy to spot - the grown man crying during a hockey game.

Son! AINEC!!!! I took my son (and wife) to the opening home game this year, he was only 6 months old at the time! Also took him (and the wife) to the blue and white scrimmage!
Start them young!

Love this post! I left long island in '83 and have been a die hard fan since. My wife just got me nice seats for the last regular season game, which I'm sure will be nuts!

With this magical season, i'm sure there are people that are most deserving of seeing this team one last time before they leave. If anyone has a good story of a person that they think is most deserving (and most in need of help) please let me know. My wife has opened my eyes to random acts of kindness and I can think of nothing i'd enjoy more than helping someone in need catch one more game at the old barn.

By the way, i'm not rich and not looking to spend tons of money, but I will help if I can.

Maybe we should all send pictures of ourselves to MattMartin for a daddy and son and Isles themed GDT for the Habs game in March.

Agree 100%. Very happy for you, and best of luck with your career.

I had thought about going to my first ever Islanders home game, but it doesn't look like it now (at least before the move). After last year (when they could hardly give tickets away) it would have been somewhat ironic if I travelled all the way from Edmonton to Uniondale, and then had to scramble for a ticket. Very glad to see the fan support increase so much. I'm sure it's contributing to the success of the team.

We took my son to game 4 of the Isles/Pens when he was 5 and it - to date - was the greatest experience of his life. I thought he was going to burst a blood vessel he was so excited.

We are now expecting our 3rd this summer (this time a girl) - nice to see that you can bring kids to a game. Not sure I'm gonna do that as I don't know how fun that will be for anyone involved, but its good to see that its at least an option if the babysitting falls through. Regardless, she will undoubtedly be a hockey nut as she will have two older brothers that will probably make her be goalie as soon as she can stand.

And my son has seen Rush in concert twice. (he's 12)

His first hockey game was on his first birthday - Jackets at Tampa.

I'm such an awesome dad.

It was no big deal(however all kids are different). It would have been impossible without hearing protection, he would have cried from it being so loud. But outside of that he just stood up on my wifes lap, jumping up and down, and laughed at all the people behind us in our section. Watched the game alot. Had a bottle while he was their. Never cried. Even fell asleep in the 3rd period waking up with about 2 mins left to go. He dug it!
I thought it was going to be way more stressful than it was, especially considering it was a packed house and loud for opening night. I wanted to make sure he was their though for the last opening night at NVMC!

Good call (and I say that as a woman). My dad and I bonded entirely over the Islanders when I was a young 'un, and now I'm a season ticketholder who takes my 79-year-old Dad to games. (So, I guess what I'm saying is that if you start them young, they may return the favor when you're older, LOL).
