Now I know that we don't want to wish any injuries on anyone and that having the top players from each nation represent their country makes for a better tournament.... yet at running the risk of jinxing someone, who would each country most sorely miss in case of injury? Phrased in other words, who is the prospective MVP for each country who need not necessairly be considered all that valuble if he does play, but would be a backbreaker if lost?

Slovakia - Chara
Finland - ??Teemu Selane/Saku Koivu/Another Goalie??
USA - ??Brian Gionta/Craig Conroy??
Czech Republic - Jagr
Russia - Nabokov (some would argue Ovechkin/Kovalchuk/Datsyuk... but losing Nabby on top of Khabby really Pejorative Slurs Russia)
Sweden - Lundquist (more so that Foresberg/Lidstrom)
Canada - Dosen't really matter... Heatly or another prolific winger? One of the better defensemen?

only losers hope to win by wishing injuries on their opposition.

Perhaps you should drop the injury theme and revise this thread to be titled "Each country's MVP" and it might live through the day.

close this thread please

I want every single best player to play no matter what

Agree, rename the thread instead of locking it. It could lead to some some interesting discussions...

Don't be so uptight, people. Hypothetical scenarios, remember? Just think of it as MVP..

Slovakia - Chara/Hossa
Finland - Saku Koivu/Another Goalie
USA - Rafalski, as the principal puck-carrier
Czech Republic - Jagr
Russia - if it were known that Nabokov plays up to his ability, I'd agree; else if Kovalchuk plays his "set me up" tune, Datsyuk is the vital cog; else, by default its Ovechkin and his energy.
Sweden - Lundquist/Sundin. With Forsberg injured and no Naslund, Sundin's composure is important for the Swedes, especially if they face a powerhouse like Kazakhstan in the quarters :)
Canada - Iginla..could be anybody

Canada - Sakic. The heart and soul of the team who always plays his best in the international tournaments.

I was thinking that losing a center wouldnt matter much to Canada or even make the team better as Spezza, Staal, Crosby, and Marleau are all availble.

Canada
Chris Pronger/Wade Redden

Czech Republic
Jaromir Jagr/Patrik Elias

Germany
Marco Sturm

Finland
Kimmo Timonen/Toni Lydman/Sami Salo

Russia
Andrei Markov

Slovakia
Zdeno Chara

Sweden
Henrik Lundqvist

USA
Brian Rafalski/Mathieu Schneider

For Finland it's hard to say, mayby Timonen..
Sweden it's definitely Lundqvist.
Canada: Sakic
USA: Modano
Czech: Jagr
Slovakia: Chara
Russia: Markov or Kovalev

This might be hard to believe, but for the U.S. Keith Tkachuk. If he's healthy, he'll present a match-up nightmare for most defensemen.

What does everybody see in Markov for Russia? Goaltending and hard work from its best forwards is whats problematic for this... the D-men are

Russia: Nabokov
Canada: Pronger/Redden
Czech Republic: Jagr
Slovakia: Marian Hossa
Sweden: Lundqvist
Finland: S. Koivu
USA: DiPietro

actually for Finland I'd say Olli Jokinen.

I think we'd have a harder time finding a replacement for him..
If Koivu goes out, Jokinen would be #1 and I'd call up Filppula for the #2 playmaking centre role.
If Jokinen goes out.. ouch, we lack a poor mans version of him.. The defensive specialists like Hahl aren't all round enough, and well, there aint another OJ in sight.

We can do without a goalie, heck we've done without a goalie every Olympics until now.. although we woudnt do very well..

Slovakia
goalies- doesn't matter as all are on same level
defense- definitely Lubomir Visnovsky, you guys all name Chara, but Visna has always been our top D
forward- Michal Handzus

I agree on Jokinen, but what about Niittymäki. If he gets hurt we don't have anyone to replace him.
