Why?

Canes avoid a lengthy buyout / get rid of 6 years of Kotkaniemi, and get the cap space they need. They also get a “better” 1st round pick than they’ve already got and 1 year of Dvorak (who might connect with new linemates) to replace Kotkaniemi.

Montreal gets better offensively with Necas and hopes Kotkaniemi turns it around.

Also, the whole offer sheet saga would come full circle. Full kumbaya.
 
I think the Canes will say no. The buyout for Kotkaniemi is very reasonable if they go that route. They'll want more value for Necas. Also, I'd rather not have Kotkaniemi back in Montreal, although I'd still accept the deal and try to flip him.

No. Kotkaniemi buyout is NBD if it comes to that; we might just hang onto him and try again. We will probably move him this offseason for positive value and everybody here will be shocked.

Why would we want Dvorak? The reason we're moving Kotkaniemi isn't just that he's not the 2C we hoped for. He's a perfectly serviceable 3C who is slightly overpriced currently in what will likely be a market-rate deal within a couple years. Our issue is that we have Staal, KK, and Drury and a solid, deep system. We're selling from an area of excess.

Necas is worth a lot more than #26.

Wait! Carolina would consider buying out the last 6 years of KK??

That’s just insane. I don’t see it happening at all.
 
Both teams pass. Carolina would want more than a late 1st-round pick for Necas and Montreal would rather have one more year of Dvorak than six years of Kotkaniemi.

They have till july 1 2026 to do a 1/3 buy out of as player U26.

His caps high sg as above $5M

The buy out is under $1M per year, higher during contract years.

Anybody acquiring him isnt going to cost much because they also are eating the buyout aspect so they arent giving up much to take his contract

Wasn't he a barely serviceable 4th line winger during the playoffs?
