Because he is a sub NHL caliber defenseman.

Fine for organizational depth I suppose. If he doesn't end up on waivers at some point, this is a bit of a fail for Montreal. He's fine if the plan is to drop him in the AHL.

I don't think we watched the same Wideman then. He's a decent #6-8.

...Heh, I only saw at first that he was getting a two year deal, which seemed really uncalled for. But at 775K it's really of no consquence.

Ideally suited for a 7thD role, but I suspect he'll see more ice than this because there's legitimately 3 rookies amongst the Habs Top-6 (not couting Petry in that group) and you just don't play three rookies on D in the NHL.

Your comment reminds me of my dad questioning my mom for buying 4 Ramen noodles for 1$ at the Dollar store.

I might borrow this line, eventually. :)

He played alright as a bottom pair guy. They'll need some NHL depth on the right side if they trade Petry. Wideman also is a guy that will stick up for the young guys. How is that even remotely a fail?

I don't see how anyone can complain about this. Fair deal for a guy that did more good than bad on a terrible hockey team this year.

I was one of Wideman's biggest fans in Ottawa. But seeing people bring him up as a "good leader and mentor and good to have around the kids" is pretty funny. Happy if the guy matured, but that was far from his reputation in Ottawa, regardless of Uber-gate.

He's an absolute fine #6/7 guy on a rebuilding squad though from an on-ice perspective though, there's no denying that.

He was pretty good in the second half of the season and can run a power play. 27 points in 64 games in this garbage fire season is relatively impressive no matter how you cut it, surprised the AAV is that low

He probably matured then, because his attitude was A + here. Great with the young guys, never complain even when he was scratch, everyone like him in the lockeroom and even in the media, the journalist love him.
