Smid is on Ltir and likely will be all season. So his 3.5 mill will be a cap dump the day the season starts. It costs the Flames nothing. Yet it would cost them if they traded for emelin.

I'd probably do it, it'd be like the reverse of the Spacek-Kaberle trade. Smid's contract is done at the end of the year, and won't count against the cap during the season. If there's absolutely no interest in Emelin from any other team, it's a deal I can live with.

OP doesnt understand that there is no reason to move Smid to anything but LTIR, no reason to trade for a 3rd pairing defensemen thats overpaid, we already got Wideman

Smid may never play again & will be LTIR'd, Emelin can actually play. Overpaid by about $500K-$1M but he's a solid number 4.

Emelin can at least play hockey right now, and as a matter of fact, he actually played some really decent hockey last season, looking like he's regaining some of his pre-injury form. Sure, he's overpaid for a #5D, but he brings a consistent physical element to the game every night.

I don't, we don't need Emelin as much as the cap space.
We only need cap space this season. Lots comes off the books next year and Emelin fits exactly what management says they want to do. I have little doubt the Flames would be in on him if the price were decent.
