Move over Jim Benning, Joe Sakic is the worst GM in the NHL (long)

He's not even that good at the draft table.

He's fumbled two top 6 picks and figuratively thrown away some later round picks on players whose parents would even admit they have no NHL future.
He hasn't fumbled on Juolevi. Juolevi was ranked as the highest defenseman by most scouts and was the consensus 5th overall pick. He's taken a longer developmental curve than the others, that's all. Jury is still out on that one. The power of hindsight..

As for the late round picks, why not use it on an older player with upside? If they amount to anything, they can be sent to the ECHL or even AHL and if not, they won't hold much space.

His free agent signings have been pretty terrible and his trades although not good have been decent recently. One of his strengths is definitely the draft. Hell even got one of the best goaltending prospects today in that terrible 2014 draft in Demko..

Sakic deserved all the heat he got as he had a couple of really poor seasons. However, the last year and a half have been terrific in almost every way.

U didn't like the Orpik trade in Sakic part.
If your gonna dump him soon afterward at least force DC to add some $$$$. Taking on the entire contract looks silly. Even a million dollars would make a difference

I really like the Grubauer, Orpik deal from a Caps perspective.

The Canucks screwed themselves over more by committing $17M to the likes of Eriksson, Sutter, Gagner, and Gudbranson. If Dorsett weren't on LTIR, the Canucks would be spending nearly $20M on 5 players who, at best, are 3rd liners/3rd pairing defenders.

It's a special kind of incompetence that simultaneously spends to the cap and puts one's team in the running for 1OA at the draft year after year.

Benning is a bad GM.

Makes you wonder if, perhaps, the words from above are that they don't want a rebuild. They want to be as competitive as possible, so spend to the cap.

As funny as those moves are, have they/will they stand in the way of the rebuild happening smoothly? Without giving it much though, I'd say probably not. Maybe Eriksson, seeing as he still has 4 years left at $6M.

Throw Treliving in this pile with his last 2 trades, letting Byron go, signing Brouwer that pathetic human being of a player lol. And on and on.

Orpik contract dont have absolutly no impact on Avs, they just used him for as a coupon for a lower price. Great move by both sides.

Sakic has made some good moves over the past year and has looked like a solid GM, but I wouldn’t put him past the middle of the pack. If it wasn’t for Mack carrying the team to a playoff spot, Sakic would still be in the doghouse. We need to see some sustained success out of the Avs before he deserves some real praise.

Every GM that has ever been called brilliant got there with the help of some excellent players. If we were to create a list of the 5 best GM’s right now, 4 would probably have a top 10 player on their team.

Treliving is lowkey a terrible GM and I've been of this opinion for a long while

His best players were players he inherited and he has traded away a lot of Calgary's tomorrow so they can still be a fringe playoff team today. The one good trade on his record was just completely undone.

It's a big red flag when a guy has only been on the job 4 years and has already hired 2 coaches.

I hope for Flames fans he gets fired next year before he thinks about trading more core players.

If the Ava can build off last seasons success, I’ll give Sakic credit. If they fall back, a lot of questions will be raised

I laugh at all the people who say Benning is a bad GM when his predecessor was the bad GM. And yes, Sakic is turning out to be a stinker of a GM.

I like how you laugh and claim Benning isn't at fault with his predecessor doing most of the "bad" wheeling and dealing. Nonis was for sure to blame on A LOT of deals.

Well the same applies for Sakic. From 2006 Giguere and then Sherman from 2009, til when Sakic took over (partially with Roy) basically purged the prospect pool and threw money at overagers. Once Sakic and Roy took over, Roy wanted his team (big strong and defensive), hence this rebuild. Roy signed Stuart, Beauchemin, Iginla all overagers, and ran Stastny/ROR/McGinn/PAP all out of town. Filling holes in the lineup with stop gap players, and not prospects in your farm system like every other team has.

Since Joe has finally taken full control on all the GM duties, like when he drafted Mikko Rantanen and then a year later Tyson Jost over Roy's guys, Roy bailed and Sakic was left to fix the mess. Since then, when Joe officially was fully 100% in control, he has to be easily in the above average conversation. Him and Dorion have basically switched spots, with one trade.

People forget that Roy had the majority of the say in GM duties up until 2016, when Sherman was finally weeded out and everyone stopped listening to Roy. As soon as Roy lost his say, roughly start of calendar 2016, the team started to do some good things. Once Sakic was 100% in control he has done more good, than bad.
