I laugh at all the people who say Benning is a bad GM when his predecessor was the bad GM. And yes, Sakic is turning out to be a stinker of a GM.

Even if his predecessor was a bad GM, which he wasn't, that doesn't mean that both of them can't be at fault.

Weren't you the same guy defending Desjardins just because he had a shitty roster?

He was a bad GM because he didn’t retool the roster after the cup run and essentially ran the team into the ground.

Pretty good 1st day of the draft.

Probably a combination of learning on the job and not operating at cross purposes wit Roy who was worse on the personnel end and trying to fight the last war with a big team.

Inb4 lock. It's super nice when sensational threads like these get called out when they're totally wrong.

Worst GM list:

1. Chiarelli
2. Bergevin
3. Benning
4. Dorion*

There usued to be a bigger gap between 1 and 2 than 2 and 3, but Bergevin is making a solid case to catch up to Chiarelli. Dorion gets an asterik because having the worst Owner in the league has a huge impact on his job.

You have no ****ing clue what you're talking about with Benning on your list.

Benning is building a hell of a crop. He inherited a tire fire and is finally breathing life into it.

It wasn't a sensational thread at the time, he had a couple of really bad years. He has improved since then. Doesn't change the fact that a lot of his moves early on were bad

Kinda hard not to when you’re picking top 10 every year basically. What was gillis’s Highest pick that was not acquired via trade? 20 something

Only hf boards where building a prospect pool with numerous top 10 picks is better than building a Stanley cup contender that Gillis did

Sakic has made some good moves over the past year and has looked like a solid GM, but I wouldn’t put him past the middle of the pack. If it wasn’t for Mack carrying the team to a playoff spot, Sakic would still be in the doghouse. We need to see some sustained success out of the Avs before he deserves some real praise.

Benning inherited a dysfunctional team that hated their coach (Torts; team finished in top 10 in Benning's first year before he could really wreak havoc on the lineup), developed it into a tire fire through terrible trades and signings, and is building a prospect pool thanks to three consecutive bottom-3 finishes.

Botterill might be here someday. Guy traded the 6th round pick to Toronto for their 6th round pick next season.

Yeah you are thinking who cares but it's the principle of the trade. Toronto's pick is going to be way later than Buffalos next year.

The guy didn't even get any value, he actually lost the trade. Especially when the trade right after was for a team to move up into 6th for a 5th round pick next year.

Botterill is clueless.

that is such a benning move

After a few underwhelming years where they completely misread where the organization was and stocked up on useless veterans (Iginla, Beauchemin, Stuart), Sakic has had a strong bounce back.

Buying out Beauchemin (and Orpik), finally realizing over the hill veteran leadership is useless when they can't keep up on the ice. Staying away from bad contracts in free agency. Shrewd waiver pickups with Nemeth, Barberio and Nieto giving cheap depth. Started drafting European players, which they didn't do much of earlier. His gamble of playing hardball in a Duchene trade paid off. Getting Grubauer for a 2nd round pick and money was a creative move.

The person who started this thread was obviously one of those people who think they know it all. Also, probably hangs out with a bunch of people who agree with everything he/she says and we all know echo chambers are useless.

To be fair it was made during last seasons horror season, everything went wrong that season.

Well to be fair, this is why a SC winner would know more than a random HF poster. The problem is thinking you know better and thinking you know what goes on behind the scenes.

All I read from you was jeallous jeallous jeallous sakic doghouse jeallous

Benning is worse.

- Kesler for Bonino, 21st overall, and Sbisa (not a cap dump, he was targeted in trade...)
- Garrison (top 4 d-man at time) for late 2nd
- That late 2nd for Linden Vey
- 3rd for Dorsett
- 3rd for Andrey Pedan
- Gustav Forsling for Adam Clendening
- Kassian + 5th for Prust
- Bonino, 2nd, and Clendening for Sutter and 3rd
- Lack for 3rd
- Shinkaruk for Granlund
- McCann, 33rd overall, and 4th for Gudbranson and 5th
- 5th for Larsen

- Sbisa signed for 3 years, $3.6M per year (as an RFA)
- Miller signed for 3 years, $6M per year with an almost full NTC
- Dorsett signed for 4 years, $2.65M per year
- Sutter signed for 5 years, $4.375M per year
- Eriksson signed for 6 years, $6M per year with NTC/NMC and is buyout-proof

- Let Hamhuis, Vrbata, Richardson, Matthias walk for nothing as UFAs

Is this a joke? All of those moves were average to good to great plus you didn’t even mention his drafting

He's good at the draft table but his trades and free agent signings have been subpar.
