He’s positioned the Coyotes perfectly for a rebuild. They’re tanking beautifully this season. He’s rebuilding the right way, and they will look a lot like Toronto in a few years.

Unless you somehow think that the Coyotes should be winning right now, in which case that would explain your lack of understanding on his excellent job so far.

He’s made some solid future moves then made some stupid win-now moves. Currently the Yotes are dead last with a mediocre prospect pool. There’s nothing particularly special about that. People around here get too excited about adding a few picks and prospects.

Waaaaay over there
Benning is worse.

- Kesler for Bonino, 21st overall, and Sbisa (not a cap dump, he was targeted in trade...)
- Garrison (top 4 d-man at time) for late 2nd
- That late 2nd for Linden Vey
- 3rd for Dorsett
- 3rd for Andrey Pedan
- Gustav Forsling for Adam Clendening
- Kassian + 5th for Prust
- Bonino, 2nd, and Clendening for Sutter and 3rd
- Lack for 3rd
- Shinkaruk for Granlund
- McCann, 33rd overall, and 4th for Gudbranson and 5th
- 5th for Larsen

- Sbisa signed for 3 years, $3.6M per year (as an RFA)
- Miller signed for 3 years, $6M per year with an almost full NTC
- Dorsett signed for 4 years, $2.65M per year
- Sutter signed for 5 years, $4.375M per year
- Eriksson signed for 6 years, $6M per year with NTC/NMC and is buyout-proof (!!!)

- Let Hamhuis, Vrbata, Richardson, Matthias walk for nothing as UFAs

Come on, as poor a GM as Benning has been, you're really reaching with some of those selections.
Lack for a 3rd, seriously, that grinds your gears?
And although I hated seeing Kassian traded, he was one of my favourite Canucks... the guy was not an asset at that point and really needed a change in scenery. Two changes of scenery, apparently.
Bolded are his actual worst f***ups.

Anyway, Bergevin is probably the worst... then some drunken sack race dead heat of Benning, Sakic and Chiarelli.

I know the struggle of people reaching to get their point across. Someone today said that the Yakupov trade that Chiarelli made was a knock against him.

Nah, he's doing a very good job the last couple of years now. After a rough start and some tough learning lessons, he's really starting to make some good moves.

Jim Benning was never the worst GM in the league. Not even close.

If you look at what he has done building our prospect pool over the past 3 years, id say he's one of the best in the league.

I just don't think he has the personality to be a GM. He seems like too nice of a guy. It'd be easy to call his bluff. Add in his lack of FO experience, he was destined to fail.

I was a critic of his, but this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Too easy to call his bluff? He stuck to his cards and was able to absolutely rake it in with the Duchene trade. The O'Reilly trade is looking pretty good with Zadorov coming into his own and Compher doing well, the Duchene trade looks brilliant with how good Girard looks, and then with the added bonus of Bowers playing great at BU, Ottawa's 1st rounder that could very well end up in the top 5 next season if they don't manage to claw their way back out of the basement this season, Nashville's second this year, Ottawa's 3rd rounder (potential top 100 pick) from next year and Vlad Kamenev who has potential to be a very good #3 C, or a low end #2.

Then he was able to convince Kerfoot to sign with the Avs, and he is on pace to have a 60 point, 20 goal rookie season, he signed Bernier to back up Varlamov and he is doing well, he flushed out all of the junk in one offseason, drafted Makar and Timmins potentially solidifying the entire right side of the D for years to come with Barrie, EJ and Meloche already in the fold, and now going forward his main goal is to find a goalie to take over the reigns as #1. He basically turned a franchise on its knees into a one with potentially decent future in one summer.

An insane amount of hyperbole here, among all the other insignificant minor trades....The Lack and Shinkaruk trades are clear wins for the Canucks ...another example of a self loathing so called Canucks fan here folks...

"At the time of the trade"....?....LMAO

Isn't "after " the trade that matters?

Realistically, it's a combination of the two and depends on the context of the trade.

If you solely judge a trade on the 'after', then luck becomes a huge factor. For example, if a team A traded Couture for a late 2nd to Team B, that would be a stupid trade. but if that late 2nd turned out to be Kucherov, would that imply Team A won, simply because they won by chance?

I know the struggle of people reaching to get their point across. Someone today said that the Yakupov trade that Chiarelli made was a knock against him.

The problem with Benning here is there really isn't any big high profile failures you can pin on him, rather it's a long and steady stream of these 'Yakupov' trades that have whittled an already declining Canucks team straight to the basement with only a good-average prospect pool to show for it.

Like one obvious string of events, the Hamhuis to Gudbranson transition. Chicago wanted Hamhuis at the deadline, but Benning was twiddling his thumbs so Chicago sent Dano and their 1st for to Winnipeg instead and we ended up with nothing. Hamhuis wanted to resign in Vancouver, but Benning wasn't very interested and blew the cap space trading for Eric Gudbranson instead.

So the end result the Canucks could have had:
Dan Hamhuis, Marko Dano, Jared McCann, 2016 #22, 2016 #33, 2016 #94.

But instead Jim Benning worked his magic and we ended up with:
Eric Gudbranson, 2016 #140

That there is the Benning special. Not as obvious as some other moves because you have to piece it together, but it's all there.

Two other good examples:

Trading Ryan Kesler, Gustav Forsling, 2015 #84, 2016 #33, 2016 #55, 2016 #94
for
Brandon Sutter, Erik Gudbranson, Derek Dorsett, 2016 #64, 2016 #140

Or

Spending draft picks 2014 #50, 2014 #85, and 2016 #124 to 'upgrade' an effective line of Matthias-Richardson-Kassian to Prust-Vey-Dorsett.

The general strategy here is to let effective players (usually Gillis guys) walk via free agency and then spend draft picks in poor trades to downgrade the vacant position.

See above.
Chiarelli traded away Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, and a 1st rounder in the deepest draft in years which was used to pick Barzal for a 2nd pairing one-dimensional dman and a mediocre third liner.

Chiarelli has done a worse job and actually had valuable assets + the best player in the world. Benning had a couple aging stars and junk.

I laugh at all the people who say Benning is a bad GM when his predecessor was the bad GM. And yes, Sakic is turning out to be a stinker of a GM.
