Was just browsing through HockeyDB today....something caught my eye.

What is the biggest ratio of goals to assists in one season in the post-expansion era?

I looked through a few seasons in the 70's, and then the last few years (2000-2008), and was aiming for at least 25-30 goal, 2:1 G:A ratio.

Danny Gare 75-76: 50 G, 23 A
Bill Collins 69-70: 29 G, 9 A
Wayne Bianchin 76-77: 28 G, 6 A - 82% goals, best I could find overall
Brent Sutter 83-84: 34 G, 15 A
Tim Kerr 85-86: 58 G, 26 A - 69% goals, best over 50?
Brett Hull 91-92: 70 G, 39 A
Peter Bondra 94-95: 34 G, 9 A - 79%
Ray Sheppard 94-95: 30 G, 10 A

Rick Nash 03-04: 41 G, 16 A - 72% goals - best for over 40 goals ever?
Jordan Staal 06-07: 29 G, 13 A
Johan Franzen 07-08: 27 G, 11 A

I'm sure I'm missing plenty, I tried to take a cross-section of years. I'll try to add to it as I find more.

Wow, fancy table! ;)

Yeah, Bondra doesn't surprise me one bit being on there twice. He was actually one of the first I looked at when I started doing this.

How about Brett Hull's 86 goal season? He had 45 assists. Just for comparison, Gretzky had 120 assists when he scored 92 goals. And 118 assists the year he scored 87 goals.

How about the biggest ratio in reverse? I would imagine Gretzky's 52 goals vs his 163 assists ranks up there.

Adam Oates has a couple of seasons worth mentioning: 90-91 he scored 25+90=115 points in 61gp and in 00-01 13+69=82

I bet some defenseman has scored like 1 goal and 30 assists.

In 1947, Leafs defensemen led all blueliners in scoring with 0 goals, 29 assists. He was a tough, physical defender who played a big role on four Stanley Cup-winning teams. He played nearly 800 games and was a two-time 2nd team all-star.

I guess it's not surprising that a defensive defensemen on an excellent offensive team would hold the record for most assists without a goal.

Cool. Do you have similar stats for d-men only? Off the top of my head remember Sergei Gonchar and Adrian Aucoin finishing with 20+ goals and only about 10 assists. And Dustin Byfuglien finished with more goals than assists this season... pretty rare feat.

I know he doesn't meet the minimum goal criteria but one year for Quebec, Scott Pearson scored 13 goals registering just 1 assist. Puck hog!

In reverse, Henrik Sedin just recently had a 10 goal 71 assist season.

I'm pretty sure you're talking about Jimmy Thomson... But hey HO, this ain't the ATD board, you can name the players :)

Byfuglien's a forward now. 8 goals and about 15 points at D, 11 goals and about 20 points up front.

High Assists to Goals ratios doesn't strike me as exceptional since it's so common. It's much more rare to see a great sniper with lousy assist stats.

Interesting question: Is this only a product of NHL counting secondary assists? Or is it somehow that the pure setup-man with a crapload of assists is a more common role than the excellent sniper whose only roll is to score? I would guess it's just a product of the secondary assist (nothing wrong with it), but it would be interesting to see someone dig into it statistically. For example, does known snipers such as Brett Hull or Pavel Bure, who actually have decent goal/assist ratios, have mainly secondary assists?

A forward scoring a truckload of assists and no goals will be labeled an excellent playmaker, and a forward bunching up on a great number of goals, but hardly any assists will have an egoistic reputation.

Does the true goalscorer/sniper have a "bad" reputation? Not really bad, but not quite as classy (I hate that word) as the playmaker. I guess in the end it all comes down to how he plays his game outside of the offensive zone. Alexander Ovechkin has a good reputation since he works alot in his own zone, and shows a lot of emotion in the games, whereas Pavel Bure is renowned as somewhat of a slouch just sitting on the blueline and waiting for the breakout pass. Thoughts?

I actually meant to type his name...

But you're right, when I'm writing something in the HOH forum I often blank out the player's name by mistake. It's a forced habit by now.

You couldn't count that era of Lalonde, Joe Malone, Howie Morenz etc. anyways, only 1 assist were handed out per goals in those days.
