HF recently ranked the most likely cup champions for 2022-2023.

Top 5 teams were:

Colorado
Tampa
Carolina
Toronto
NY Rangers

Bottom 5 teams were:

Arizona
Chicago
Montreal
Philadelphia
San Jose

Question is - among these 10 teams - what are the 2 most likely occurences of one of the top teams missing playoffs or bottom team making playoffs?

Clearly none of them are very likely to happen - but there isn't a "none" option. Just vote for the two most likely ones.

Try and post and explain your reasoning

Habs fan voting Leafs and Habs....obviously.

Reasons for Habs making it......I think we are better than people give us credit for. I am firmly in the camp of hoping for Bedard, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us sneak in. Monahan up until he was riddled with injuries was a legit 1st line centre. If he bounces back to even a solid 2nd line centre, that would be huge. Dach could take a step forward as well and may assert himself as a 2nd C as well. Suzuki and Caufield could put up 80 pts and 40 goals respectively. Allen has always been a solid goaltending. If he is a top 16 goalie that would be huge. Depth...Gally (heart and soul)....Evans...Anderson....can be solid. And lastly....rookie D men need to play way above their expectations.

Leafs.....well.....if their D and goaltending shit the bed......they are in trouble. Outside of Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares, I am not particularly enamored with their offence. Those 4 are obviously elite or very good.

I don't think any of these will happen, but for the sake of guessing, went with the leafs because that goaltending duo is bad.

Miss the playoffs - I said Rangers, who seem closest to missing if one key player goes down (Shesterkin). I think Florida would be my vote if they were an option.

Make the playoffs - Cannot see Chicago, Arizona, or San Jose there. So its Montreal or Philly.

I think all of these are almost impossible.

Picked leafs because they have the biggest question mark in net of the teams thus if they have an epic goaltending collapse they could miss. Almost impossible still but all the others seem actually impossible.

Of these, I think that Toronto's the clear answer to miss the playoffs with their goaltending, and we already saw what that can cause against Canadiens.

Most likely to make the playoffs are San Jose Sharks in my opinion, who I think are getting quite underrated. They still are underdogs to make playoffs, but certainly more likely than any of the other options.
None of the above is the simple and only correct answer.
It says "most likely to miss", not "which will miss". Hence "none of the above" should not be an option. Even 0.0001% is more likely than 0.000001% even if neither will likely ever happen.

Redwings start the season with 2 wins and is tied for top of their division standings so I would say that OP was biased in not including them in this poll considering all the new additions the Redwings had this offseason 5 of whom have already either already scored a goal each after just 2 games or post a shutout. I think they have a pretty good chance of making the playoffs this season based on how just deep they are now especially with a dominant third line that has an average height over 6'5".

I said Tampa and Philly. Love or hate Torts, I could see him catching lightning in a bottle compared to the other options. Tampa is still a great team but maybe all those long playoff runs catch up to them? Again probably not and I think all five teams listed will make it, but didn't want to be "no fun"

Leafs - Their goaltending is horrific.

Sharks - Despite their start, I don't think they're terrible on paper for a so called "bottom" team and the West is pretty middling after a few top teams. It wouldn't be out of the world shocking to see them get the second WC spot.

I mean yeah, it's "not fun" i guess...but if any of those "Top Teams" miss the playoffs, it's the result of a completely unpredictable set of injuries to key players.

And none of those bad teams are making the playoffs. 4/5 literally aren't even trying to make the playoffs.

The only realistic option for me is Philly. Because their roster still seems decent if Hart re-emerges, and Torts will get some spine into that group. No way in hell are they a contender, but they could make it I reckon.

Everything else seems far-fetched. I guess technically all of those top teams could miss if they get massive injuries, but not willing to make a bet on that. For people saying Toronto because of their goaltending, their goaltending sucked ass last season as well and they had their best regular season ever. They are a good enough team to get in even if they have shitty goaltending.

I never really thought Philly was all that terrible. I could realistically see that happening.

0 chance any of the top teams listed miss though. I picked the Leafs. Maybe if Matthews' leg falls off.
