Most former 30+ goal-scorers on one club

It's early in 2024-25, and we Oilers' fans are again bemoaning management decisions and seeing our supposedly high-octane club off to an anemic offensive start. One result of having Ken Holland as recent GM is that the club is now very old, and has a lot of current / former high-scorers.

I noticed the other day that the current Oilers' roster has nine former 30+ goal scorers (if I include one guy on long-term injured reserve). These are (with peak goals-season total listed):
64 -- McDavid
55 -- Draisaitl
54 -- Hyman
50 -- Perry
40 -- Skinner
37 -- Nugent-Hopkins
34 -- Arvidsson (done in just 58 games)
30 - -Kane
30 -- Henrique

So, I'm wondering what's the record for most PAST 30-goal scorers on any one team? (I don't think any of the Dynasty-era Oiler clubs had that many.)

1989 flames
66 -- McDonald
51 -- Nieuwndyk
50 -- Loob
47 -- Mullen
42 -- Gilmour
31 -- MacLellan

Maybe missing someone, outside McDonald it was recents season and that does not include the:
Roberts
MacInnis
Fleury
Suter

Really loaded team, yet not that close, the 2002 Red Wings had less than I thought has well,.

1992 Pens maybe.

85 -- Mario
51 -- Mullen
50 -- Trottier
48 -- Coffey
40 -- Stevens
40 -- Reechi / 45 -- Tocchet ( not at the same time)
32 -- Francis
----------------

27 -- Jagr about to score 32 that year

60 -- Lafleur
60 -- Shutt
53 -- Larouche
47 -- Cournoyer
44 -- Lemaire
32 -- Lambert
30 -- Houle

Will join that group that season,
31 -- Mondou
30 -- Tremblay

I think they only loose Cournoyer so maybe 1980 has one more

The 2004 Leafs had eight: Sundin, Nieuwendyk, Nolan, Roberts, Mogilny, Reichel, Renberg, Francis

The 1994 Pens had eight or nine, depending on how the question is interpreted - Lemieux, Jagr, Trottier, Francis, Stevens, Mullen, Tocchet, and Sandstrom. Plus Straka reached 30 goals for the first time that season.

EDIT - one more option. How about the 2003 Stars? They had nine players - Modano, Turgeon, Lemieux, Muller, Arnott, Guerin, Barnes, Young and Dahlen. Plus Lehtinen reached 30 goals that season.

I figured a few Rangers teams would do well in this category, but I wasn't expecting the 95-96 Rangers team to do so well. I'm counting 8:
  1. Messier
  2. Graves
  3. Verbeek
  4. Robitaille
  5. Nemchinov
  6. Wayne Pressley
  7. Ferraro
  8. Kurri (deadline acquisition)

93-94 Pens are also very strong here:
  1. Lemieux
  2. Jagr
  3. Francis
  4. Stevens
  5. Mullen
  6. Trottier
  7. Sandstrom (midseason acquisition)
  8. Tocchet
And Straka scored 30 that season. McEachern had 28 in a prior season as well.

90-91 Kings:
  1. Gretzky
  2. Robitaille
  3. Sandstrom
  4. Granato
  5. Dave Taylor
  6. Sinisalo (acquired midseason) / Krushelnyski (traded away midseason) - not traded for each other, but they did not overlap
  7. Tonelli
  8. Scott Bjugstsad (!!!)

EDIT: Actually, the 89-90 Kings do even better with 11 players at one time (12 if you count everyone who played for them that season, i.e., counting each of Nicholls, Sandstrom, and Granato):
  1. Gretzky
  2. Robitaille
  3. Sandstrom (acquired midseason for Nicholls)
  4. Granato (acquired midseason for Nicholls)
  5. Taylor
  6. Tonelli
  7. Krushelnyski
  8. Scott Bjugstsad (!!!)
  9. Keith Crowder
  10. Jim Fox
  11. Mikko Mäkelä

95-96 Blues are pretty interesting because of all the midseason roster moves. Esa Tikkanen was on the team but traded early on in November so we won't count him. They acquire Gretzky in February, Steve Leach on March 8, Glenn Anderson on March 12, and then trade Dale Hawerchuk on March 15. So for three days, you can count all those players as overlapping.

  1. Gretzky
  2. Hull
  3. Hawerchuk
  4. Anderson
  5. Leach
  6. Corson
  7. Zezel
  8. Greg Gilbert
  9. Geoff Courtnall
  10. Adam Creighton

You missed Greg Gilbert and Darren Turcotte so actually 11 30-goal scorers played for the Rangers at some point that season but with all the ins/outs there was never more than 9 on the team at once.

Greg Gilbert is one of the most random 30-goal scorers in NHL history and turns up on a whole bunch of these lists because he scored 30 early in his career and then spent the rest of it as a depth guy on top teams.

To that end, the 92-93 Blackhawks look pretty good thanks largely to one-time top scorers turned depth players (including Gilbert):
  1. Troy Murray
  2. Rob Brown
  3. Greg Gilbert
  4. Dirk Graham
  5. Joe Murphy
  6. Dave Christian
  7. Michel Goulet
  8. Brent Sutter
  9. Steve Larmer
  10. Jeremy Roenick

EDIT: going back to 91-92, the Blackhawks lose Murray, Christian, and Joe Murphy, but gain Steve Thomas, John Tonelli, and Adam Creighton (all on the team at least in October of 91) so it's a wash.

Tonelli
Potvin
Trottier
Gilbert
Gillies
Goring
Nystrom
Kallur

That's 10 guys, and all 10 were playing for the team at the same time until Goring was dealt to Boston mid-season.

Doesn't include Lafontaine who hit 30 the next year.
This is a great one because it includes a defenceman and at least two guys that I would never have guessed had scored 30 goals (Gilbert and Kallur).

I'd kindly settle for a tall glass of milk.
1986-87 Edmonton Oilers
  1. Wayne Gretzky
  2. Jari Kurri
  3. Mark Messier
  4. Glenn Anderson
  5. Paul Coffey
  6. Mike Krushelnyski
  7. Mark Napier
  8. Kent Nilsson
  9. Danny Gare
  10. *Dave Lumley (1981-82)
Esa Tikkanen's first 30 goal season also came in 1986-87. Not that it counts either, but Reijo Ruotsalainen got to 28 in 1984-85 with the Rangers.

Also to point out, that Napier and Nilsson were both technically with the Oilers from March 2nd through to March 6th of 1987. The Oilers played on March 4th and the 6th (the day that Napier was traded), though Napier didn't play in either game. Nilsson did play in both of those games.

The last time Danny Gare suited up for a regular season game (or playoffs), was on February 18th, 1987. He announced his retirement in March 3rd of 1987 (UPI archives).

"I've decided to retire at this time because with Kent Nilsson coming to the Oilers, it's become a numbers game," Gare said. "I don't want to leave this game as a practice players."

Dave Lumley announced his retirement, November 5th, 1986.

You could swap out Lumley for Tikkanen though, as Tikkanen registered his 30th goal on March 6th, 1987. In which case, day of, Gare and Napier were on the roster, and Tikkanen had already touched 30 goals. So, you could say that it was in the past the moment he scored the goal at the 2:01 mark of the 1st period.

Holy cow, I think we have a winner!!

This one is really unexpected. Especially in that some of these past 30-goal seasons are total one-offs (Bjugstad) or are for relatively obscure teams (Plett).
