I agree. we missed out on BT and so many others
but as fans we need to move on, is all I say.
I always think it's good discussion to see where we went right or wrong. In this case we know we missed out on a great player. But we only have half the equation. So, let's conclude it was a mistake from what we already know... how big a mistake was it? We really have to wait and see. But for the sake of argument, let's say RB never plays a game and this was an awful mistake.

How do you mitigate it? Can we still win based on what we've done going forward? I'd say we're still in good shape even without Reinbacher and Michkov. You can acknowledge the loss of a great offensive player and still look at things going forward. We may have cost ourselves time and lost an opportunity by not taking him. But are we still headed in the right direction? That's the real question. I'd say the answer to that question is still an unequivocal 'yes'. Based on where we are going I still like what we've done a lot. Crushed the draft in 22. We have to see on 23 - but we got Fowler as well as RD. Next year we'll get an idea of how good Demidov is. Plus the Laine signing seems to have been way better than I expected.

I'd say regardless of how that Michkov thing works out, we're still in very good shape.

Just like the swing and misses on Newhook, Slaf, and Reinbacher.
I’m not ruling out DR just yet but I agree with Newhook and there must be a lot of concern within the organization about Slaf. These prospects everyone keeps hyping just aren’t that good.

I’m always amazed whenever outlets or these so called “experts” rank Montreal’s young core and prospects as #1 in the NHL. Where is the talent? Slaf and Dach 2 goals?

You’re right, our prospects are overhyped and just not that good. People need to start realizing that.

And Cooley has looked fantastic so far this season. It's like everything we do we f*** up! Hopefully Demidov is the real deal and we could add a guy like Misa at the draft

Honestly with our draft history it doesn’t matter where we draft. Our scouting department will botch it.

We are the Raiders of the NHL when it comes to drafting.

1. Dach
2. passing on Michkov (and this year instead of Demidov it could be Silayev, Dickinson, Yakemchuk, Buium or Parekh)
Hughes seems poor judge of hockey talent. Doesn't look good for future. Unless he makes additions to his front office. Dach, Newhook, Barron all mistakes. Costs us 4 first round picks

Is that true? The Chantal part?

French interview is here

English summary here

"On the air of 98,5 Radio, she revealed how GM Kent Hughes approached her with the idea of acquiring a Francophone player in a trade, but a transaction that would see that player move elsewhere. Machabée expressed her concern and convinced the general manager to abort the trade in order to keep the respect of the fanbase and not anger them with how they could have treated the player in a quick three-team move."

Most likely we would have retained on Huberdeau as a 3rd party for one season.

Kent is looking like a bust until proven otherwise.
No michkov , Slaf sucks , dach sucks , Newhook sucks , Barron sucks , Reinbacher is broken.

But we beat the Ducks so yeah.

This post is funny af cause it's also true af.

God damn.

I guess the only thing we can really do is laugh about it....

At least Dach has a reason why he sucks now though, tbf.

Nice to know a former RDS 'journalist' is running our team.

Wait, WTF?

"The gap was widening with the fans, not just the journalists. I found it worrying. I wanted to have free rein."

Guys, wtf is going on.

A little dramatic.
Just a little yeah. What's disappointing in Hughes moves is for at least 2 of his moves: Dach & Reinbacher there was no considerations given towards the possibility of either players playing their careers as injured as what they had gone through before.

None whatsoever, and right now I'd say that's what is biting the most for Dach, not the initial potential and pick invested.

We'll see if it bites Reinbacher next season. My guess is yes it will, for at least half a season if not more.

Pay your taxes, pay your tickets, buy your merch, eat your hot dogs and STFU... basicly

In other words, if some one you dont know comes in to your house at night, tell them Hi, welcome them, offer them something to eat and when they leave with your TV and jewelries thank them and ask them to comeback again.

The issue isn’t Michkov. It is: are we in the right hands? If they got Michkov wrong, what else can they get wrong? What else did they get wrong already?

I’m not sure about them. Until the Habs try to win I feel like it’s all undetermined.
I don't think this is a fair assessment. The Knights traded a 1st, 2nd, 3rd for Tatar, then added Suzuki to Tatar along with a 2nd for 4 years of Pacioretty. If they made such a horrible mistake, why wouldn't they make a horrible mistake again? I think it's safe to say that the good outweighed the bad for the Knights.

It was the same thing with Bergevin. Had Bergevin reasoned his expectation with the Subban to Oilers trade and "settled" for Draisaitl+4th OA and drafted Matthew Tkachuk, would we be as upset as we were for the Sergachev trade?

That Sergachev trade for instance looks a lot worse because MB sat on his ass the entire time completely unwilling to make meaningful additions that actually help the team. He waited until they were dirt cheap like how it was with Petry.

Chantal bragged to the media about her influence in nixxing a trade that would have made the public upset
She didn't nix anything, Hughes went to her to asking for an opinion, she gave it, and he made his own decision.

As far as I know we don't even know the timeframe here, but I would guess it was probably around the time of the whole Petry re-acquisition. So likely not even relevant in the slightest since we were are probably talking using a retention slot for getting similar value.

The thing with looking back on things is we will never know. If the Leafs in 2016 drafted Matthew Tkachuk first, may they have won a cup by now? What things would have happened after that pick. How would the team have been built after it? There are endless possibilities and at the end of any decision point a team makes there is the final result.

If we go on to win a cup in the span of Michkovs career, while he wins multiple individual trophies, but never a cup.....well....I'll take that cup....even if Rein completely busts and never helps directly in winning. We will never know where that decision point could have led us in the endless streams of the universe.

His acquisitions made with the purpose of accelerating the rebuild have been 'Ls'.

- We might never see Dach reach his potential due to injuries.
- Newhook has been underwhelming at best.
- Barron a major disappointment.
- Emil looks acceptable.

That is all I can remember at this moment.

We still need to wait and see how the picks develop.

Kent is a cuckhold if true
I didn't listen to the whole French interview so maybe the English translation is a bit sensationalist, but Chantal did say so herself.

I found it to be wholly unprofessional, bragging to some rando radio personality about her influence with the team, regardless of how much impact she actually had.

She didn't nix anything, Hughes went to her to asking for an opinion, she gave it, and he made his own decision.

Well it was during the summer of 2022 so we know the timeframe.

Thinking logically, Huberdeau makes the most sense. Calgary needed cap relief to sign Kadri so maybe we would've retained 50% on Huberdeau's expiring deal in the Tkachuk trade.

Maybe if we made that deal it leads to no Monahan - still, I don't like our PR person bragging about influencing trades.
