He's always been a more goals than assists kinda guy, but this is just crazy. You'd think he'd have a few by accident by now. Does anyone know the modern day NHL record for most goals scored by a player prior to recording their first assist on the season?

The criteria for the award has changed in recent years but it used to be based heavily upon wins-loses for a pitcher. A pitcher with a 20-3 record would be a Cy Young candidate
But that's just a stupid comparable. More NHL-relevant would be something like faceoffs. Goals-assists has nothing to do with Win-loss. Both of those are wins.

I see this as more of a Bondra award, though Bondra's most skewed season was 34 goals and 9 assists.

It's tongue in cheek because of the way the stats are often presented textually.

i.e., he's 10-0 on the season for 10 goals, 0 assists. It's similar to how a baseball pitcher's record is presented.

It's not meant to be an accurate comparison or a real award, it's just silly fun, matched by the silly fun of a dumb cross sport reference.

In his rookie season in 1917-1918, Joe Malone potted 44 goals and 4 assists, don't think anyone will ever touch that record, though Brandon Pirri in 2014-15 did 22 goals and 2 assists for the same ratio.
