Sean Monahan is really playing some solid hockey for us after all his injury history.

He's on pace for 57 points while playing with a bunch of underwhelming linemates.

He's leading the team in a lot of underlying stats as per Lemay on BPM Sports.

The best option of course would be to trade him and then sign him as UFA but I didn't include this option just to see the raw mindset of the board.

Cheers!

He's far too slow to be part of our core moving forward. It's best to get value for him and keep injecting talent

A lot depends on his demands. I'd prefer extension over trade but if he's looking for a long-term security (5+ years), it's better to trade him.

I don't mind 5 years in terms of his age - he'll be 33 in 5 years. But his injury history makes that 5th year a risk. If his injuries flare up again over the couple of years, we're left with an albatross contract for a few seasons, like Calgary had last year - 6.3M in cap space for 20 points.

At this stage of the season, I'm going with trade.
But I beleive the decision doesn't have to be made this week and a lot of things can happen until TDL.....

If they still see Dach as a Center and with the extremely good camp of Beck at center......and considering it might be a lot harder to trade Dvorak......it's trade market for Monahan as of now!

No dilemma yet, trade deadline isn't until March.

The guy will not sign here as a 3C, even if willing to sign a team friendly deal. So as a 2C ?

Well where do we see Dach fitting in ? Right now the wing seems ideal, but C is still very much an option.

What about PLD ?

Are we going to draft top 5 ? Not at this rate.

I think he gets traded.

Here's the choice:

1) Bet on Monahan, who will be in his early 30s by the time the Habs are ready to contend. It'll be an expensive bet, since he'll want term along with a big salary that reflects the rising cap.

2) Bet on the mid-late 1st-round pick we'll likely get for Monahan. Then we either package the pick in a trade or use it and hope we get lucky. Leveraging that pick might be the only chance we have to get a top pick in the 2023 draft.

Nothing set in stone, but right now he looks an opportunity to sell high.

He’s a great story. Seems like a well liked team mate.

Let’s not forget we’re in a rebuild/retool and Monahan doesn’t really fit the age of the core. He is likely 32-34 before this team is ready to make any serious noise, given his history of hip issues I wouldn’t be willing to make that long term gamble.

I'm leaning towards trade him. I'm not opposed to the Habs resigning him for a very short-term cap friendly deal, but I don't think that he would agree to it. He's a riskier than normal signing if it's long/medium-term with higher cap hit.

I think trading Monahan before or around TDL 2023 remains the optimal course of action. Even though he plays quite well and could be a reasonable mid-term (3-4 years) solution at C2, keeping and resigning Monahan would essentially mean a harder/longer transition period since the Habs would finish higher in the standings this season; Dach would likely continue on RW1 instead of being tested on C2; no room for Beck if the latter is NHL-ready within the next 2 years, etc.

This being said, if the Habs can somehow deal Dvorak and Edmundson for quality assets this season and Monahan’s up for a mid-term (3-4 years) extension around 5M AAV, I’d consider it!

If we can get good value for him, trade.

If not, extend him. Even if we trade him, I'd circle back around in the summer with an offer.

I'm not able to vote in the poll yet.

My vote is to trade him. Let's get maximum return and if he wants to be here long term he can sign with us in the off season.

No one cares
It's a win-win for both sides to trade him. He's not getting any younger and moving on allows him to have a shot at winning a cup and it gives us another potential first-rounder from the same player. In the summer if he doesn't have teams interested in a long-term deal because of his past injury issues, he becomes open to signing a 2-year deal with us or another team.

Simple for me...if you get an offer too good to pass up, you trade him.

With that said I would have no issue bringing him back.
He is one of those veterans that can be so important in the room and for young players.

Also the concern is his health and the term Monahan would want.

We can't afford another Gallagher debacle type of contract.

I’d make sure he’d be interested to sign with us first of all.

If he doesn’t want to resign and the return is not as high as we’d like, we wait until the last minute to get the best offer possible.

If he wants to resign and the return isn’t greater than a 2nd rounder, I’d rather we sign him on a 2-3 year term. If he wants more, I’d probably make the trade.

Exactly right. I really like the guy, and had the same situation come up 2 or 5 years ago I would have signed him. But we're FINALLY rebuilding, let's take the opportunity to trade him for some bluechip prospects and/or 1st rd picks.

And that's ESPECIALLY true if the reports of Dubois wanting to sign here are true! We'd have Suzuki/Dubois/Dvorak(Beck)/Evans at center + whatever Monahan brings back in a trade.

If he's slow then it should show up in inferior results on the ice, and yet, he is doing just fine.

What is the obsession with being fast for the sake of being fast? Matthew Peca is real fast, but is he effective?

Is Suzuki that 'fast'? I actually think the two are similar players, only Monahan is more mature, and Suzuki has better vision for passes, so he will get more points, but a 60 point centre who is strong in the dot and can play both ends of the rink is a good 2C and an elite 3C, so what is the problem with him being part of the group that complements the core of Suzuki-Caufield-Slaf-Guhle?
